This little clutch of five eggs put me over the 10,000 mark. Now this doesn't count slugs and it doesn't mean I hatched 10,000
This is 10,000 good looking eggs laid.

I know its a bit more cause I didn't keep any records first few years.

Good to see you know what you are doing, lol. A little off subject, what do you think is the outcome of so many babies? Its kind of strange, because if everyone were as successful as you, if 1/10 of the hatchlings went to breeders I think everyone in the country would own a snake now! So in a different way, what do you think is the percentage of babies that live to reproduce??My guess would be about 10%.

shannon brown Jun 24, 2008 03:38 PM

well, Its hard to say Jeff but I just went over all my records and t looks like I have hatched just over 8,000 in all those years so just over 80% hatch. Now, its really hard to say how many of them make it to breeding size etc..
Back in the days I only wholesaled and sold to pet stores so I doubt many ever got bred.
I also did allot of corns and pueblans, siniloans etc..And they are much esier to get up to size and to get to breed.
Its just always been a hobby for me and I have never depended on it for my sole source of income.I would never make it unless I really changed allot of the things I due.I just can't make money with allot of the snakes I produce but its what I like to work with.

to make a "living" in this business. Its the exact same as Marine Biology...its great when you dont have to make big $$, but sooner or later you have to realize that you have to compete against all these people who just love to do it as a hobby. If a "hobbyist" produces 8K snakes and cant make it a job.... Oh, and TOUCHE my friend on that other forum post, lol. I thought you were going to make a joke that my type of women were MONSTERS!

terrysxtreme Jun 24, 2008 06:31 PM

Shannon ,that is awesome ,that is a ton of snakes ,this hobby has come along way ,In 1965 I bred and hatched my first corn snakes ,16 eggs and 16 hatched ,I had no contact with other snake people ,no computer ,no shipping ,I was even breeding my own mice ,I released most of the hatchlings but sold some to a pet store for $.50 each, alot of changes in 43 years

great job Shannon

wow, I love to hear those stories. My first clutch ever was a coachwip.I was 10 years old and caught her gravid of coarse. All 11 eggs hatched on damp paper towles and a gallon jar.All I had was about 3 old books at the library to go by.It was 1981 and I was 10.LOL....
My first breeding to hatch was actually some lyre snake (trimorphodon).12 eggs all hatched and I was 15 at the time.My parents always said I would out grow it.LOL.....

Hi Shannon,
Bruce Atherton here! Congrats on 10,000+ eggs!
I notice you use vermiculite for your hatching medium,
which I used for years. Lately, last two years I cannot find
anymore. I have tried Armstrong, Home Depot, etc.

Where do you get yours? I have been using Pearlite, but I don't
like it...too abrasive.

Comments please, THX
Bruce

shannon brown Jun 24, 2008 06:52 PM

Hi Bruce, I use vermecultie and hatch-rite also.I still buy the vermeculite here in Bishop at my locale nursery. Its the only place I have ever bought it.

Good luck and I will see you in Anaheim.

terrysxtreme Jun 24, 2008 07:34 PM

Shannon ,how do you like hatchrite ? what is it made up of ?

Terry M

shannon brown Jun 24, 2008 07:44 PM

I like it so far.I am not even sure what it is but it works good.I have only had to ad water a couple times the 2 years I have used it.
Shannon

MikeRusso Jun 24, 2008 08:21 PM

I tried HatchRite last season with a few clutches.

Like shannon, I had to add water, which is not such a big deal. But, I really didn't see much of a difference between HatchRite and my usual vermiculite/perilite mix in terms of hatch rates or overall egg quality during incubation..

I am open to opinions on this, but I am convinced that HatchRite is worth the cost??

~ Mike Russo

charleshanklin Jun 24, 2008 11:35 PM

I have never used hatchrite, how much does it cost? I usually just do a vermiculite to perlite mix of 2-1 and I have not seen any reason to change. I am open to new ideas though and if it is that much cheaper then wht the heck. I could see it being more of a problem to find though.

your list...those two on the side need some moisture!!!

LMAO!

Congrats Shannon...I'd love to have a coachwhip clutch or a Lyre snake clutch.

Speaking of the Lyre snake...did one ever bite you? If so, did it affect you in any way? I always liked that snake...but never found one alive (in Arizona).

My first clutch was Cal. Kings...in 1996-97...a huge clutch too...18-19 eggs...all hatched.

shannon brown Jun 25, 2008 01:12 PM

Never been bit by a lyre.Just been bit one time by a mitchelli (stephensi) and that was enough for me.

RG Jun 25, 2008 03:26 PM

Sorry to hear that!

Any long term damage?

-Rusty

shannon brown Jun 25, 2008 06:42 PM

Well, I am blind in one eye and walk with a limp and drool all over myself but other than that I am good to go.LOL..
No, there was no tissue damage or anything.I was lucky, 3 days in I.C.U. and 40k later and I was ready to go.

>>Speaking of the Lyre snake...did one ever bite you? If so, did it affect you in any way? I always liked that snake...but never found one alive (in Arizona).
>>

I have, by a 3ft nice robust male Lyre, one I raised up. Made me bleed, but he hit and let go, didn't chew. Nothing happened to me afterwards.

Lyre's aren't real trustworthy snakes. They are always cautious. I recommend using a snake hook in general. It's not that they strike when you pick them up, it is more when you are holding them and make a sudden movement, or someone else does so near you.

I raised a female as well. She would sit near the cage door and wait for food, take it right out of the tongs like I was feeding a big boa or something. All of mine were excellent feeders on thawed rodents, and they would feed morning, noon or night - they didn't care. The babies sometimes needed some lizard scenting for a few meals, but then never looked back.

Babies are escape artists. They will get through gaps that will stop a baby milksnake, even though their (the lyre's) heads seem bigger. I understand how they can exist in rock crevices. Those eyes are so cool.

Yep, I am very surprised they aren't more popular snakes. They are very cool like hognose.

Brandon Osborne Jun 25, 2008 08:32 AM

Very cool that you kept track all these years. I used to and got lazy. Does working for a former large breeder count? I think I hatched around 3800 that first year.....of EVERYTHING. I know I have my old records around somewhere. That's cool. Congrats.

It was a campbelli.LOL..... in (99) I hatched over 700 pueblans.I sold everyone to one person out of the egg for $25.00
It was great and I did it for 3 years then he lost the contract with pet-co or pet smart or whatever he had going.

congrats brother. That is truly a milestone but the real milestone is the fact that you still managed to entertain and take care of five girls as well.
How the hell did you find the time to do other things in 1999 through 2000? Geez.....
Again, great job man!!
