Is It Possible for a Gravid Boa ......

reptimals Jun 24, 2008 03:41 PM

Hello, one of my bigger female boas just had about 3-4 slugs (not sure on exact number bc she had already smashed them when i saw them) approx. 3 weeks before her due date. She did everything by the book, i saw breeding, she swelled up, ovulation, post ovulation shed , gravid coil , went off feed , and so on.

So is it Possible she had these and is still holding the rest of the litter whether it be actual babies, slugs , or a mixture of both? after having these 3-4 slugs she did not loose much weight and she hasnt eaten in months so i am assuming she might be holding back because she still retained so much weight ... is it possible that her body rejected the slugs while still caring for the rest? can she still have the rest of the litter in 2-3 weeks ? i know that boas can retain slugs, heard of them retaining just a couple, but for a boa her size she would be retaining a much larger amount i would think...

anyone with any experience with this situation? ever have a partial litter and the rest later on ? maybe its because one side ovulated before the other? i am just not sure ! ... any help appreciated ...i am still waiting on my vet to call back! thanks

Hi,
It is possible. I have seen this with boas in the past. I am not sure whether this is pressure related or the selective release of infertiles. I have also seen the odd babies dropped prematurely before the healthy litter followed a week later.

It is possible, exactly as Dr. Booth has said. However, what is very unlikely is that your vet will know anything about what is going on with your Boa. Very very unlikely unless he is also a Boa guy and there are only a handful of those vets in the US.

Cross you fingers and hope you still have a few babies coming!
