New Blackthroat

gordano Jun 24, 2008 04:22 PM

About a week ago I started a threat about whether I should get a red tegu or a blackthroat. Initially I was leaning toward the tegu, but since I already have an arg. black and white, I wanted to have the monitor experience. Take a look at the pic of him if you can. His name is Kimbo. Anyway I bought 1000 crickets for him (and my other reptiles). Can I use this as a staple for him while he is younger? I was thinking of doing this for a while and then moiving him to rodents. Also, should I feed him as much as he can eat? Today he ate 20 crickets and probably have could had more if I let him. Thanks for any replies!

Kimbo? as in Slice?

you can offer as many insects as it will eat, assuming the rest of the setup is ideal. we feed baby and juvie monitor insects 4 days a week, then 2 days with rodents. works great, great growth and health.

check out our site for our caresheets and FAQ, packed with more info, and get a copy of the Bennett Sav book, it is the best book on captive monitor husbandry available.

Kimbo Slice... correct. I have been caught up in the hype I admit it, lol. Anyway thanks for the reply. I will take your advice and feed him a rodent at least once a week. Varried diet is always best. I have frozen ground turkey as well. Can this be fed occasionally?

He is 16 inches head to tip of tail.

He's about the size of mine then. Ive only had him about 2 weeks, he's still thin and just over 19 inches now. "Rex" is eating 3 to 4 hoppers Wednesdays and Saturdays and 30 crickets the other days. On mice days he still eats about a dozen crickets.

Thanks for the reply. At first I thought 20 crickets was alot, but now I understand Blackthroats are pigs (I read that before I got one, but I never really understood it until I saw mine in action). Fine with me, I just ordered 500 fuzzies and I have 1000 crickets and 1000 mealworms on hand. I have an all you can eat reptile buffet set up for him.

What size mouse?

cinderellawkids Jun 25, 2008 12:56 PM

Mine is eating hoppers(mice), bigger than fuzzies, just weaned usually and about an inch long. They are a little small for mine but the adult mice are too large. I tried fuzzies the first day I brought him home, he ate 6 as if they were crickets and looked up for more.

He also likes 5 day old rats, but any older are too large for him
