bullfrog with puffy eye membranes

mwehner1 Jun 25, 2008 10:51 AM

If anyone could suggest a treatment plan for a Bullfrog who has swollen looking and puffy nictating eye membranes I would much appreciate it. She is currently in quarantine on moist paper towels which are changed daily. I am rinsing her eye with dechlorinated water once every morning. When I stopped rinsing for a short period it got worse with her not being able to even open her eye and it spread to the right eye as well. Now it is isolated to only the left eye. She is still eating regularly. A couple months before the eye problem developed I did notice her body twitching involuntarily (spazing) but she has not done this since then. I would appreciate any advice.

Thank-You,

Michelle

You probably will expect this answer if you've ready any of the other threads, but a vet appointment is your best, most direct path to treating this guy successfully. A lot can be going on with the eye, and a proper exam will assess what it could be. An infection? A scratch? Or is it a key to a more systemic problem (is the twitching related?).

If you choose not to take it to the vet, then you are limited to doing what you are doing. Keep it clean, flush it, and be sure the animal is otherwise well taken care of. Minor problems will heal with time. Larger problems will fester and grow, which is the drawback of not knowing exactly what is at the root of the problem.

Good luck

Ian
