rubidus hatchling

steve fuller Jun 25, 2008 07:50 PM

I am excited. This is afirst for me. Lone rubidus egg hatched last night. It's a female, about 16 in., and very defensive. Incubation was 112 days. Mother is a Snodgres hatchling and father a Germani hatchling. She has flecking more like an Eastern than a Texas indigo. Lots of light color on face, chin, and down ventral surface.
New camera - lousy picture.

Nice job Steve! Was that a lone egg or are you expecting more?

This was only fertile egg in a clutch of eight. I foolishly bred female when she was probably too small. She was eggbound after laying the one good egg. With some help from the vet I eventually got the rest out. Female has been feeding well since then and looks fine. But who knows?

Congrats Steve, very cool. It's always exciting to hatch something for the first time, especially when it is an uncommon animal.

When Alan's clutch hatches next month, we'll have more of these great animals in capable hands. Hopefully, rubidus will be spread around the Dry community in the next few years. I can't wait too long, I'm getting old! LOL

Thanks. Alan has one of the only two substantial rubidus groups I know of. Because of excellent and imaginative husbandry, he should break open the floodgates next season. Of course, he's close this year too.

I had hoped I would have some of those by now, but it hasn't panned out. I'm glad to see that someone is producing those beauties.
