hide box paparazzi...

daveb Jun 25, 2008 08:00 PM

for whatever reason all these critters were in their hide boxes this morning, so I felt compelled to take some pics.
To be honest I would love to have some space where I could take these pics outdoors in natural light
1) without some nosy neighbor freaking out, lol
2) where the snake wouldn't take off and disappear while I am looking through the lens (just my luck, hahaha).
Until then, they really hold still best in the hide box. Kind of clinical, but...

This an '04 girl I hatched here from a Vandeventer male paired to a zoo lineage female. This girl bred for the first time this year, laying six eggs.

this is a '99 Vandeventer female, one of my most reliable breeders. She has laid eggs every year from 2003 to the present. She is the only female that I have that likes to pair up with a male her size or bigger. All the others try to avoid bigger males, no matter how much loving the male is offering. Maybe an artifact of my collection, but I suggest having several different size/age males around until your girl finds one she really likes.

This is the first female I ever acquired from Terry Vandeventer in 1999, along with her partner (now deceased). There was a billion joules of electricity in the air when I got that box, something you don't ever forget. She hasn't been a regular breeder and I regret I haven't held back some of her offspring. This year I got 1 good egg out of her, and providing it hatches it will stay here. She is a sentimental favorite.

this male is a holdback from my first clutch in 2003. If I remember correctly I had 4 males and one female, a great ratio. As it turns out he is a fantastic looking specimen. He's a big boy and when he decides he doesn't want to go back in his enclosure, it is a good wrestling match.

I acquired this male in 2006. I love his straw color and his body blotches are a nice brick color posteriorly. Unfortunately they don't show up so well...

I acquired a pair of hatchlings from John Ginter in 2002. The pair bred in 2006 and this is one of the holdbacks. One of my most favorite patterns. He also has nice brick colors in his posterior bands. He's currently refusing rodents, preferring to dine on chicks.

This male came solo from Terry Vandeventer in 2006. Why buy a single male? Terry had got a clutch of eggs from one of his real old males that I believe had not sired a fertile clutch before. This old snake is named "chocolate chip" because Terry says he looks like chocolate chip ice cream. I thought the good looks and gene boost would be a good deal. This youngster is one of the calmest animals in my collection and nice to look at, too.

sister to the male in "volume five". I like the straw background and can't wait to see her colors when she is 5' long.

a big girl hatched here in 2006 from Vandeventer animals. I monitored growth rates of some hatchlings over a year; at one year, she was the biggest of the bunch. I like the very busy anterior pattern.

this is the sister to the Ginter male hatchling hatched here in 2006 (vol.6 no.1). She has some really neat apical and interscalar flecking on her lateral posterior, a neat reddish brown. I don't think it shows, so I guess you'll have to take my word for it.

Thanks for looking, I hope you have enjoyed.
The end!

Phil

you put up some great series lately. I saw all these critters just sitting still so I had to at least try to be entertaining!

Thanks.

The black pines are smaller then they look in those pic's but all are very beautiful.

Female should breed next season hopefully.

I have 3 different lines of northerns and my black pines are from John Cherry and are Lloyd Lemke animals.

I worked with brooksi for a long time and they will always be a favorite, but I think I have found a niche with pits. I really like them, and in spite of my best efforts (hahaha) they seem to do OK here.

Nice snakes Dave. Also wanted to let you know the biggest northern girl dropped 11 eggs the other day. The girl with the heavy black on the neck is due any day as well.

Dwight,
sounds like the maternity ward is busy! yeeeha, that's great news.

I was in Rochester NY in '01 or '02 poking around a reptile store there. The owner was in the back feeding some things in racks when I thought I saw a black and white northern pop in and out of a drawer. I had to really press the guy to let me have a look and in the end I picked up the girl w/ all the black on her neck. She was so white in the back 1/3 I couldn't believe it.
Word has it that Rochester was a hot bed for pits in the 90's and though the trail had gone cold by the time I visited, I still consider that girl to be my best pet store find. I will have to post a pic of when she was young.

Gotta love pits!

Dave,

Great looking snakes. It's nice to see my babies all grown up. "Chocolate Chip Junior" didn't turn out too shabby did he? I need to take some pictures of one I held back.

"CC Senior" died two weeks ago. He only sired the one litter. Bob and I got him from the wild as an adult about 18 or 19 years ago. He was one beautiful snaker.

Cheers,

Terry
