The Joan Rivers Of Cornsnakes

Just a cautionary tale for those of you who may run into this in the future.

My three year old R.O. corn (Love stock) recently had what I thought was an upper R.I. She had been in shed for nearly two weeks and I was beginning to wonder when she would finally pop. (I hate to go that long without feeding her)

On the 14th day, I noticed something that had me concerned. The top of her head had turned a dirty brown, and her mouth was slightly open. On top of that, when I handled her, I could hear a slight "pfff" sound with ever breath.

I put her back into her tank, and a bit later she had a huge BM. I contacted a friend and got advice about what to do in the case that it was an upper RI, but something about that just didn't sit right with me.

I began to think that it might be complications from the "stuck" shed. I referred to Kathy Love's book, and sure enough she talks about these same symptoms, while mentioning that it is very rare.

Well sir, a 1/2 hour later, I found the snake roaming her tank and rutting over a log. Her skin came off in one piece, and everything immediately returned to normal.

Just something to keep in mind!

I had identical thing happen with a kingsnake last year - coming out of brumation, I could swear he had a URI and I made an appointment with the vet. The day I was suppose to take him in - he shed and was back to normal. I took him in anway - no URI.

With a king. The unshed skin dried and pulled tight causing the lips to draw back giving the look of RI symptons. I soaked him and removed the skin and he looked normal again.
