Rodent Caging Ideas

fhayden1 Jun 26, 2008 01:58 PM

Ok, I'm planning on breeding rodents on a modest level for myself. Maybe 2-3 racks of 15 tubs for each rack. I don't want to house these rack in the house or garage. I'm wondering what are some ideas for housing them outside.

I'm worried about other critters getting into the food or racks. I don't want my rodents contaminated with diseases.

Thanks,Frank

Build a hardcore shed and hook up one of those $100 window ac units

I've been thinking to build a Arrow aluminum shed and I've got a portable ac unit I could use. The area of my yard where I plan to put the rodents is covered by shade from trees. The Arrow she isn't very big but it'll work for what I want.

My friend built a rack and covered all the sides with 1/2 inch metal screen and that used a thin material to let air in without giving prying eyes a look. Seems to work to keep the food just for the feeders. Todd

Good idea, however, this is Florida and it rains like crazy down here. So I think I'll require a building of sorts. Maybe I can build some type of cover.

Especially in Florida other creatures like raccoons and oppossums will get in and eat your rats. Have seen it happen to several people who tried to house them outside.
