How can I get my breeder mice back in gear...

jmpeniche Feb 08, 2003 03:54 AM

It seems my once prolific family of 1 male & 2 females has quit producing litters since late November. Any ideas or can anyone refer me to an article about breeding mice so I can make sure I'm not doing something wrong.

if they are over 6-7 months of age.. you can expect a slow down in their breeding..

i usually see a sharp drop off in production after the ages of 6-9 months..

it might be time to start a new colony..

The male and 1 female are at least 18 months; the other female less than 1 year. Based on comments I'm getting I suspect age is the prime culprit.

they are WAY past breeding age..

kill em off.. and get new breeders..

as a general rule you should replace your breeder mice every 7 months with new breeders..

best of luck

Have you changed anything?
Food, water, shelter, cage placement, lighting, etc.
Has anything else changed?
Temperature, noise level, etc?
How old are they?
Some times it's hard to tell unless you raised them.

No, nothing has changed except that its winter now and I started heating the 10 gal. aquarium they're in. I recently moved them into my basement where it remains a steady 70 degrees. Based on other comments I've gotten I suspect age is the problem. Thanks for your response.
