i set up some heat tape yesterday to provide warmth for four 10 gallon tanks to hold my geckos individually. anyway, it is set up on a plastic shelving system. the shelves have spaces in them (kind of like vents). i think that this might be cooling the tape because it wasnt getting that hot. however, when i touched it, it did feel hot on the top, but not on the bottom. does it only heat the top of the tape? also, inside the tank wasnt getting warm. there is a small space (about 1/8 inch or so) between the tank and the tape. does the tape have to be in contact with the glass to heat it properly. i turned the rheostat all the way up, but it still didnt really heat up. if anyone has any suggestions i would be very grateful. thanks

Question for heat tape users (kind of dumb questions)

I'd use electrical tape to attach the heat tape directly to the bottom of the cage. The gap will still be great for air circulation underneith which will prevent your glass tanks from crackings.
Definately do not keep the heat tape at max, believe me it gets VERY hot.

It also probably wouldn't hurt to recheck your connections. I have had heat tape not heat up enough until I went back and recrimped the connections.
