Hatchling with abnormal eye

holliberri Jun 28, 2008 10:50 AM

My Leo laid eggs for the first time this year. I was not intending to bread but her cagemate happened to be a boy by accident. A clutch of her eggs hatched yesterday. The one that hatched first looks perfect! The second to hatch seems healthy but it is a bit smaller and has a deformed eye. The baby is so small that I cant tell exactly what is wrong with it but he cannot close his eyelid on one side, and it doesnt look like the eye is good. It doesnt look glossy. I tried to take some close ups but my camera is not that great. I am wondering if anyone has ever seen this and if you think he will be fine and just look different or will this require some medical attention?

I looked it up on google, and the closest information I can get to it is a cloudy eye. It didn't say much info one it, except it may be an infection and take it to the vet. The only reason why I doubt this is because it just hatched and may be blind in that eye or it may not had been properly formed. Leos sometimes close their eyes or blink every once in a while. Idk if that prevents their eye from drying out. If it does, he will need a vet, before it dries out and becomes infected. Also they lick their eyes to clean it and they just do a lot of things with their eyes. The best route is the vet, but the bad thing is that it is a hatching, it nay be an incurable birth defect, and they will charge you for just looking at it, even if they can't help it. But do what you feel is best for the little guy. I would do almost anything for my leos too.

Thanks for responding. Do you think he/she will be ok as long as he can see from his other eye and eat?

i have heard of some leos being blind in 1 eye but never seen it. i recently went to a petstore and they had a blind leo adult for sale. I didnt have the heart to look at it b/c i'd probably buy it. But i think it would be ok. if you are truly worried, ask the local vet office...

Just wanted to update those who read my question about my hatchlings eye. Turns out he was able to lick the stuff covering his eye off a few days later but it kept coming back. I took him to the vet and they said he had an injury on his cornea. I have ointment that I put on his eye twice a day so hopefully he will be better in no time. He will always have a different looking eyelid though.
