Zophoba question...

babysdaddy Jun 28, 2008 12:22 PM

Fed my female collards some zophoba worms yesterday. They ate them like filet mignon, but this morning I found all the worms on the enclosure floor? Either regurgitated or defecated out WHOLE AND INTACT? Now I've seen this occasionally happen before with waxmorms and swifts I used to keep years ago. Has this ever happened to anyone on this forum? Should I be concerned (is this symptomatic of some kind of stress related GI disorder)?

Sometimes they throw them up like that because some have a hard time digesting the chitin(harder shell) although super worms are easier to digest than mealies. You can use younger worms or the ones that are freshly molted (white ones, nice and soft)

Sometimes undigested food will be found if the temps are not hot enough for them to digest properly. So check the temps also.

Nope, the temps r right on point. Just can't figure if the worms through their GI tract or not. Thanx for the help though. Gonna be a b**ch ... I got 1000 worms yesterday(LOL). Anyone need some worms?

Oh just give them one each day and see what happens, this happens sometimes to us all they throw them up on occasion. Sometimes they eat too many. Just try one each day. They do really LOVE them.

I buy them by the thousands, and always have them available.

i agree. just start them slow. i've noticed that sometimes their eyes are bigger than their stomaches and they can't hold that much food so they regurge. it sucks i know but it's be fine. just give it some time. (ha ha i rymed)

let them molt into beetles and start your own colony. that what i did and i havent had to buy mealworms since last november. althought i may have to soon because my colony has been decimated by my collareds.

The nice thing about buying a LOT of them is that you can wait around for them to shed and pick out the nice soft ones at your leisure. It's not like thye have a limited shelf life the way mealworms and waxworms do. A superworm can keep gutloading for months on end until finally its luck runs out and it sheds right when you need it to!

Oh.... of course I'm gonna be raising Zophobas. That's why I got 1000 count. I don't purchase feeders anymore, except maybe the occasional 50 or so crickets for variety (I won't raise crickets anymore... they STINK too much). I've got B. dubia, Lobster roaches and now Zophobas. Insects anyone...LOL
