My first pip of the year

FunkyRes Jun 29, 2008 03:58 AM

The first egg to dent - was severely dented this morning.
An hour ago, it had pushed the dent back out. Just now I checked - and there is a nose sticking out

This clutch is an abomination to some - MBK X Cal King.
But I'm very curious as to how they turn out.

The nose of this one is all black, quite different from the typical Cal King pip. I'll try to get pictures later today.

So far don't really know - nose hasn't come out far enough to see the eyes. There is however some white on the labials, not much but there is some there, I didn't notice it when I first saw the pip but I did a few hours later.

The mother (cal king) has a lot of head pattern, so I suspect most or all of them will have some head pattern.

I've seen this cross before there were cool variations within the clutch as well.

some looked like desert kings, others looked like SUPER thin banded cali kings, some had the thin band thin going on with "sockheads"... I can't wait to see yours

any recessives going on within this clutch?

And today I had a Cal king lay eggs, your way ahead of my schedule. I'm interested in seeing how your crosses turn out. Here's a L.A. Co. hypermelanistic, maybe yours will resemble this a little.

I think I've seen that snake before - did you post it on FH?

That's a gorgeous snake - I love the fact that it is banded, it seems that most of the readily available hypers in the market are aberrant. If you reproduce it, I'd love to know. I think kerby produced some banded hypers a few years ago.

This pippie is a shy one - but a few minutes ago, it stuck its head far enough out for me to see one eye.

It has a a very dark eye. The upper labials are black, the lower labials show some white and there is some white on his chin.

The four scales on the nose below the prefrontal scales (I'd have to look up their name) that are normally cream on Cal Kings are black.

I can't wait for him to come all the way out. Since the room temp is high 70s right now and my timer has the hovabator heat source turned off anyway, I have the lid of the hovabator off, hopefully I can get a good pic of his head - he tucks back in when I lift the lid of the hovabator.

With respect to clutch pics - I have family coming up in a few days, so I should get some good post hatch pictures with a better camera than mine. I'm going to do my best to beg the right to borrow their Canon DSLR long enough to get some good post shed pictures, but I know one of them is going to the east coast end of July, so I suspect that may not be possible. I really need to invest in a good DSLR. I hate the autofocus only cameras.

Yeah, that's the same one. Most of the hypers being bred are the Davis and Mendota morphs or Central valley black bellies. I seen Kerby's banded hypers, some I believe he got from Paul L. which originated in L.A. Co. also. I'm not breeding the hypers yet, but I'll be sure to let you know if or when I do.

This morning - this one is still the only pippie, but he had about an inch and a half out.

There are some bands but the bands are like they have charcoal on it. No head pattern, no spots on the back of the head, very hypermelanistic looking.

This was the exact result when I performed the same cross a few years ago-the babies varied from classic "Yuma" kings to very dark "hypermelanistic" cal types to a couple that were rather good examples of MBKs!

One especially striking aspect of the clutch was the size variance-the largest hatchling was three times the size of the smallest-and the sizes were all over the map between the two extremes....

First is out, two more are pipping.
Here's the first - sorry about low quality, hard to take a picture with one hand while holding a neonate with the other:

without flash - belly shot:

without flash - side shot:

I'll probably hold off on more pics until after all are out and have shed.

Very nice, funky! That king looks almost identical to a "hyper" I hatched out a couple of years ago from a wild caught gravid king.

The white rings eventually brightened up to this.

viborero Jun 30, 2008 11:27 PM

Very interesting! I would like to see some post-shed pics when you have a chance. Thanks!

Yeah - three are out now, but I'm going to wait with pics until all are out and shed, as post shed pics are going to be the most revealing - since all neonates are darker out of the egg.

So far all three have sock heads and very thin bands with what appears to be a high band count, but the sides are different. The third one appears to be more like a chain king than a cal king. The third also has a nuchal spot - barely visible (I think it is called nuchal spot - the spot at the very rear of the head on cal kings).

This does seem to demonstrate so far at least that the hypermelanism from MBKs is dominant. Single gene, no clue, but whatever causes it seems to be dominant.
