parameters for artificial incubation

steno Jun 29, 2008 11:07 AM

Hi folks,

since I'm realizing that one of my rhino females is going to be huge, I'm just preparing myself to menage some coming eggs.
It would be my very first time with iguana eggs, so I'd like to know from some breeders out there how to set the Hovobator (temps and humidity levels).
Moreover, have those parameters to be static or fluctuate along the incubation period? I'd use vermiculite as substare...
Well, any tips or hints would be HIGHLY welcomed.
My best regards
Cheers
Stef

I'm not a fan of hovabators, but if that's what you have to work with I recomend using a Helix thermostat along with it to help with flucuating temps.
When I incubate my rhino eggs in vermiculite I mix 1 part vermiculite to 1.25 parts water by weight.
Temperature at 86 degrees.
Eggs covered in shoe box size container with paper towel under lid to make sure condenseation doesn't drip on your eggs.
I hope some of this helps. If you go to herpnut.com click on articles and scroll way down to incubation of eggs it might tell you a little more.

thanks a lot for your useful reply.
Just one last Q: have I to make some holes in the plastic shoebox for air circulation?

what do u use for a incubator. homemade?

Steno Jul 01, 2008 03:47 PM

No, Hovobator is just one of the first ever incubator for herp-breeder so far, and so one the simplest. It has been used for every prime mover of the scene, and it's still employed with a lot of herps today like leopard geckos, tortoises and so on.

No you don't have to make holes for air circulation. Just open the container for 20 seconds every 3 days to give them a closer look and allow for some air exchange.
Good Luck!

Hi,
I can only speek for incubating nubila eggs.I am using vermucilte in my incubator. It is mixed 1:1.5 with water. Temperature 29-30 degrees celsius. I belive that the humidy should not be to high- 85% is enough.
