Setup for new baby blood!!

exitree Jun 29, 2008 10:07 PM

Hi, I've been browsing and reading this forum for a while now. I'm getting my first baby blood from High Plains Herpetoculture this week and have his setup all up and running. Before I get him though, I want to make sure that what I have is going to be good for him. I have a 15 gallon tank with a coconut fiber bedding to keep humidity up. The tank has been set up for a couple days now and the temps are pretty steady at 80-82 degrees and the humidity stays between 60-68%. Let me know of any suggestions you more experienced keepers may have. Here are some pics to get an idea of what's going on.

Personally I would toss the loose bedding. It is a pain to clean, collects bacteria, and newspaper is much easier. Of course that is just me. But I have noticed, for some reason, my blood urine seems either more in quantity or potency, so I find I do full paper changes more often with them. For some reason, I cant get away with just spot cleaning the blood and switching out the paper. I would think the coconut fiber would just suck this up.

Make sure the water bowl is big enough that the snake can totally fit in there. Mine like to soak for a period of time daily around 15 mins after they get their fresh water.

I would also suggest covering three sides to give more privacy. I have heard many of the experienced folks here comment that aquariums dont work well. I had mine all started in neodeshas that were about the size of a 10-15 gallon tank. So size wise I think you are probably ok. I have noticed that my bloods seem to prefer a more enclosed caging with tighter confines and I know others have commented on this as well.

Hope this gives you a start, but I am sure the more experienced blood keepers will chime in as well.

Thanks for the input. I have the back and sides covered so he'll have privacy from that. The snake was hatched in the third week of april so he's still real small and the water bowl in the cage is about 18" x 10" and about 4" deep so he should be able to fit his whole body in that and soak if he wants. The only reason I'm using the Coconut fiber is because everyone says they like to borrow/hide themselves in the substrate which isn't possible with newspaper. I've never heard the comments on aquariums not working well, is it b/c of ventilation? If so I have a little fan I could prop over the top and let go, would that work you think? Thanks again for the advice.

I believe it is harder (and I have seen this issue in the past as I started with reptiles) to keep humidity in. Aquariums have way too much ventilation.

Mine all burrow in their newspaper. You just need many layers and they find the layers. I have CB70 racks for my balls and also use newspaper. In a cage that size I use almost 2 sections of paper. They have LOTS of levels to hide in. With my bloods, I will put the first layer down in my visions (model 221) I use 2 full sections as base laid flat in layers and a third section crumpled slightly so it gives off mini caves. Also there is a size appropriate hide for each blood.

Those are at least my beginner thoughts.

Well, I got him today. He's a little lover boy, didn't try to nip a single time, not even a hiss or "spray" when I took him out of the bag. I added a few baby pics for everyone to see.

and a close up headshot (I love that the front of his nose is really light, it makes him look like he has lips!!)

Let me know what you think!!

NICE malaysian!

exitree Jul 02, 2008 11:12 PM

Thanks, I'm very happy with him. What makes you say malaysian though? Is there a way to tell malaysian from sumatran?

iant Jul 03, 2008 07:20 AM

Nope, not unless you were told it was a Mayla.

Ok, that's what I thought. His parents were wild caught and selectively paired together. Since Malaysia is pretty much closed to exportation, i'm assuming he's Sumatran.

Congrats! He's adorable! I can't wait to get mine later this month. I hope she's as well-behaved as your little guy!
