Why dont hatchlings look like parents?

holliberri Jun 30, 2008 07:49 AM

I have quickly read over many sights about morphs and genes but I would like an answer specific to my Leopard geckos. I purchased 2 week old banana blizzard and a las vegas patternless albino from a breeder. They were temperature sexed female and being a first time gecko owner I did not think to check them as they got older. The LVPA ended up being a male and now I have two babies. I understand the albino gene is recessive. Was there any chance that I could get an albino? Why do they have patterns when both of the parents do not? What does "blizzard" mean in terms of genes. I do not intent to let them breed next year and I love the little normal guys that hatched I am just curious and want to learn! Thank you!

All three of the genes that the parents have are recessive, meaning that both parents have to either be heterozygous or homozygous for any of the recessive genes for them to be produced in that breeding. What it also means is that the babies are 100%triple het. for blizzard, patternless, and albino, and when bred back together will produce some normals, patternless, albinos, blizzards, patternless albinos, blazing blizzards, and banana blizzards. Lastly, a true "banana blizzard" is supposed to be a combo of blizzard and murphy patternless. Since you bred a murphy patternless albino to that female all of the babies should have been patternless, meaning that your banana blizzard is just a blizzard. Congrats on the babies and you will enjoy the combinations you will produce in the future

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question! I dout I will let my geckos breed again anytime soon, I do not have the money or the space right now. Thank you again it is very interesting stuff!
