Mice vs Rats....

bakeaway Jun 30, 2008 10:46 AM

I pretty much feed my snakes mice, with the occasional rat thrown in. But with some of my larger kings eat about 3-4 adult mice at a time. So i am thinking of switching to rats. My question is why are rats more expensive than mice? Are they more nutritious?
The rats weigh about the same, but are almost twice as much.

Thanks

I found chickens to be a better alternative to red meat.

Eat more chicken!

when you order chicks they are frozen in bags. Almost like the supermarket chickens one eats at everyday.

Cute!

I think that kid is actually munching on a bucket of fried rats, not chicken!!,......just about everything seems to "taste" like chicken I guess!

I can’t get the picture of that kid eating the fried chicks out of my mind now, thanks!

Here’s a picture of a really nice king I had when I lived in North Carolina, caught in Burke County, near Morganton. It is eating a chick. I think they are a great food item but they are a lot fatter than a small mouse. A snake has to be big enough to eat them. This old pic is dated June 24, 1974. I bought chicks for ten cents each that had a missing toe or a blob of something stuck to their butt from a hatchery in town.

FunkyRes Jun 30, 2008 06:40 PM

If you still have a hatchery in town - the male chicks are generally not wanted, you may be able to get a deal on them.

Yeah,....rats have ALWAYS been way over-priced at pet stores, if you buy from any of the several frozen rodent companies, you get a MUCH better deal. The main reason the pet stores price them much higher, is because the rat has the potential to get much bigger, so of course, the stores take full advantage of this marketing ploy.

Gram for gram, the rat probably has only maybe a slight difference in nutritional value as opposed to a mouse of the exact same size,.....the only "real" difference most likely being the calcium content of the animal, sice rats have a slightly more robust skeleton when compared to mice.

It really depends on where they are bought, as to which ones are a better value,....sometimes buying a big "small" rat out of a pet store tank is cheaper than a smallish "medium" sized rat from the bin next to it,....it really depends on what animals are in their bins at any given time.

When you figure my last purchase of rats were huge XXLarge Rats weighing in the 400 gram range, 14 of them cost only $17.50(plus shipping of course) which would have cost a fortune at a pet store at $9.00 per rat!....that would be $126.00 not including tax!!!!

The last small shipment I got was .......

1) 14 XXLarge rats 375-425 grams each
2) 100 peach fuzzies
3) 100 hoppers
grand total including shipping....$100.19....hard to beat!

It's sort of funny that you asked "where" to get them,...because approximately two inches or so up from where I'm typing this, I see a "MiceDirect" advertisement right now about a HOT SALE in red print. "MiceDirect", and "Rodent Pro" are the ones I use, and either one has great specials too now and then that are unbelievable. I think you'll be very satisfied!

The cost of shipping will significantly increase the cost of your order.... but theres a simple way around it.

Just go to craigslist and post an ad in the pets section that says "anyone want to go in halves on a frozen rodent order??"

Thats what I did .. I met several other herpers in the area that all have been wishing they knew someone to split orders with.

I have made several orders with these people and they are great. That way the cost of shipping gets split three ways and that way is much more economical ... plus you'll meet some like-minded people.

thanks,,but even with the shipping i am saving money,,,but losing space in my freezer,..

Here’s a link to a paper I saved on my computer, it took a minute to go back and find it online. It compares whole food items fed to zoo animals, with details of content. Pretty detailed. There is info on chicks and different size rats if you look it over. Somewhat interesting if you’re a reptile nut.

I wish I knew why rats were more expensive!! LOL!! Perhaps someone can chime in who actually knows that answer.

If you are thinking about switching to rats, may sizes of rats are of course, much bigger than adult mice. I feed snakes of mine that would eat something slightly bigger than an adult mouse, rat pups, as the rat pups I get are huge!!! Something like a few good sized rat pups may be the parallel of feeding 3-4 adult mice. Then, in all actuality, it may be cheaper per feeding, plus the bulk of a good meal is there.

Take care!

somehow I found that article online and I sent it to those guys several years ago. They covered the shipping on my next order, which I thought was nice, hahaha.
This is one of my favorite articles because its one of those things where people make all sorts of claims about calcium, nutrients, this and that.... well here is some data to back up your story or to cut through some BS.
Susan Barnard's "Reptile Keeper's Handbook" also has a lot of nutrient information in it. The book is a little dated (1996) but the data probably doesn't change that fast.

Anyhow, anyone interested in reading the whole article, or if you're suffering from insomnia, check out the link below. BTW, I think I will start feeding my snakes white tailed deer and Italian wall skinks...

Good eats!
