EMERGENCY!!!! LIZZY LAID EGGS

collaredsguy Jun 30, 2008 02:29 PM

hey i found five eggs this mourning in the tank, completely unexpected!!! she laid a few days later then i planned, but she did lay. however she must have laid them earlier. im giving it a 20 hour or less time period between when i last saw her ( she was full) till today when i found her looking very skinny, and i found the eggs. the were hard and a little caved in. i was careful and moved them to the incubator. i added some water so that they will not be dented!! did i find them too late. they look still viable. i see the pink circle on a few even. how long would you say they were laid, if they were dry and dented? ohh man im excited and worried a the same time!! what should i do for the mother? my head is spinning right now!!! any help will be appreciated. the eggs werent laid in the ideal conditions i was planning for, but they are here, so now i have to see what i can do!!

Give mom some nice fresh water and some extra calcium coated bugs for a treat. They usually are very hungry after, but don't worry if shes not for a while.

Hard to tell when they were layed unless you saw them layed you did right and used your dampend substrate and put them in the incubator. What temps are you incubating? I use about 84ish can go up or down a few degrees and be fine.
Just hang in there make sure they the substrate does not dry out during incubation, but do not drip water on the eggs they will mold.

And don't handle them, move them or monkey around with them lol. Just be patient and see what happens, like a big surprise. If they are not good this time you have plenty of chances to hatch eggs later.

And it never stops being EGGCITING, no matter how many times you wittness hatching, just awesome!

uhh i had it at 83, but since you said 84ish, im letting it flucuate between those two it seems the safe thing to do... my concern is the humidity. right now its 65% humidity in the tupaware, so... i think thats good. low humidity is good for these eggs right? i just want the eggs to get plump again!!

ohh an i put the lid on the tupaware that the eggs are in, mainly to keep in the moisture. is this a good idea. ahould i use a lid or not. its only temperary until the eggs come back a bit. is this a good idea or a bad idea...

You will build up too much moisture and the eggs can become wet. You can leave a lid on and keep the match sticks or something similar on all sides to keep a gap around the lid so the air still exchanges. I had pretty good luck just by having a nickel sized hole in the center of my lid.

Kind Regards,

John

I agree can not just have a closed lid on it, you can leave it sit ajar ( kind of off on one corner) or put a small hole in it. But like Johneee said it would create too much condensation , and make your eggs die/ mold.

im a step ahead i put quite a few holes in the lid. however, the eggs became to hot, so I took the lid off. would a temp gun be useful in this situation, to find the temperture of the area around the eggs, or the eggs themselves? just thinking of another use for a tempgun, LOL!!!

I would leave a Thermometer in the incubator with the eggs so that you can see the temp without disturbing the eggs.

i have about three thermometers in the incubator, along with a hygrometer. how often should i be actually going in the incubator. ive been going in their atleast three times, since i found the eggs. should i just leave them alone and watch the temperature, and only open it if i need to raise the humidity.

yeah I would only open it to raise humidity if needed at all. If you open it to much your temps and humidity could fluctuate more than you want.

hey i just wanted to let everyone know what happens to the mother when a lizard lays eggs. omg i cant believe the drastic body change my lizzy went through. she went from looking really healthy to really skinny. i cant believe this is what the eggs did to her. im sure she will recover, but man i loved her because of how healthy of a lizard she is, but now i am having to watch her a little more, cuz i dont think ive ever seen her look as skinny as she does now!!! here some pictures i took, before and after. un beleivable!!! her color has gone as well. i hope that will come back too!!
