TSK Super Spider????

kinderman Jun 30, 2008 06:35 PM

The Sutherlands got six fertile eggs from a Spider x Spider breeding on 6-23. I applaud them for at least trying to answer "THE ?". Good luck!!!!!!

They also have 3 True Ghost clutches-- 3, 3, and 4 eggs. How come it seems that every True Ghost clutch and every Calico x Calico clutch is like -- 3 EGGS!!! What is that about?

Just once I'd like to see a female from those pairings drop 12 as if to say, "HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?"!!!!! Makes one think that there are Ball Gods messing with anyone trying for those 2 morphs!!!

If the super spider project works, which we won't know for another year assuming they get a male, unless it's a visual homozygous...
it'll come in handy.

Imagine tossing a super spider to a super pastel.
All bumble bees for the win!

what do you mean super spider? i thought the spider was a dom morph?

kingofspades Jun 30, 2008 06:48 PM

Well,
Apparently a few people have tried to make a "super spider" and the eggs have died.
So...it has been labeled dom because no one has bothered making a super spider.

I hope it's not a lethal homo form.

Kevin at nerd has produced many spiders over the years from spider x spider breedings. He has been selling possible super spiders for a long time.

Ahh, see...I didn't know that.

The spider is considered a dominant morph -- meaning that the heterozygous version and the homozygous version looks the same.

A "super spider" would be a spider that looks like a normal spider but has two spider genes and would only produce spider offspring.

ok, thanks.

But has anyone proven a spider homozygous yet to know what they look like? If it is homozygous lethal it's going to be very hard to prove through the absence of a homozygous spider.

Great job TSK sacrificing breeding for bees to try to get to the bottom of this. I'm raising up a female spider and know after all my pointing out the possibility that spider might be homozygous lethal I'm going to have to breed her to my spider male but I sure don't want to. I’d much rather make bees and I’m sure I’m not the only one so very hard to know how many potential homozygous spiders have been produced so far without public confirmation of one proving out homozygous yet. Maybe spider will yet prove dominant, but I’m not counting on it after what, close to 10 years now?

Likely just the age and weight of the females Bill, those projects aren't that old so makes perfect sence that they are not monster females yet.. 7 egg clutches often times come from females that are 4 1/2-5 yrs old or more, I doubt any of the Dbl Het for True Ghost or Calicos are anywhere near that age.. It's possible for a 3 yr old to lay 7 eggs but out of 10 girls maybe a couple or three may hit those numbers but the rest will be more like 5-6 egg clutches often times with 4 or 5 good eggs and maybe a slug or two on their first clutch , once they are 5 or over then that's a different story alltogether.. Anthony McCain..

... and their young age may also account for them also seeming to lay more infertile eggs than would be expected. Thanks for pointing out what should have been obvious to someone who has gambled on his share of younger/smaller females this season! My education continues....thanks again.

I do find females seem to have more slugs when they are young first time producers. Sometimes the infertile issues have to do with temps perhaps getting to high or possibly to low, the male you used and his track record for breeding as well as the number of good lock ups you have and how long it was from the last breeding to the point of ovulation.. Alot of variables here to consider for sure , those factors are just a few simple examples. Regardless the older proven females will generally outperform the younger ones across the board as far as the number of eggs and viability of them, as long as the above mentioned issues are also kept in mind that is. Anthony.
