Hondo breeding size ??

mikeybetz Jun 30, 2008 08:37 PM

What length would you say is the minimum to breed a female hondo?
I have a few "06" that were slow feeders for a while and didn't grow as big.I know everyone says 3yrs, so I was wondering if "09" would be possible? Thanks

You need to get a weight on your females ,third year as a rule and 300-400 grams .They might not ovulate if they are to young as well .Even so , if your females are to small they could egg bind and that is never a good thing .If you continue to feed them well they should be of size for 2009.

good luck

oh yeah, they will be old enough for sure.Don't get all caught up in the length or age or any of that.Just let the snakes tell you if they are ready.Next spring bring them up and feed them pretty heavey (especially the female). After a shed or two introduce them together and see what they do.If they bred then yes she is big enough. If she just tries to get away and or bucks the male off then she isn't ready. This can happen to females that are five foot and four or five years old so don't even think about that.
Just seperate them, feed and try again.Sometimes it will take 2 or 3 sheds and many attempts before they are ready.I have eggs just about to hatch from some of my hondos and some are just breeding now.
