A few unexpected surprises.....

stylindawg2006 Jul 02, 2008 10:37 AM

I know that this may not be a big deal to some but I am very happy.

I bred a male and female Sunglow and I ended up getting snows, amels, anerys, and normals from it.

I also bred a crimson female to an amel male and got the same results as above. I don't know how it happened but I will take it

Congrats on the babies. It's interesting that you got normals from this pairing because both parents are technically amels. How many normals did you get? I can see one or two resulting from a de novo mutation back to the wild type allele for melanin, but if there were several normals, something else must be going on? I'm no cornsnake expert, but my understanding is that albino x albino should not, through standard Mendelian segregation, be able to produce offspring with normal melanin expression.

I am not sure how you could have got normals and plain anerys from a amel x amel breeding? are you sure they were both amels? the snows is not a surprise as they are both het anery so you should have got about half amels and the other half or so snows. But to get normals and plain anerys? must be 2 types of amel and one is het for the other since you did get amels.

Very weird.

...that what they meant was normal male x sunglow female. Which would explain it if the male was het amel and het anery.

Otherwise then yeah something is not correct if getting aneries out of a amel x amel breeding.

Here are pictures of the parents and some of the babies. For those who notice the dirty paper towel, I cleaned it right after the picture was taken.

Here's the father

Here's the mama

These babies have eaten already

These ones have not taken a meal yet

boxienuts Jul 02, 2008 11:11 PM

Is it possible that you have other clutches and something was switched around or mislabled, otherwise I think the father is actually the "MAIL MAN" or the "POOL BOY".
Did you raise them from hatchling or were they purchased as adults? maybe if adults the female was already storing sperm?

i would have to wonder..... was the female bred last year or the year before?? how long have you had both? females are known for storing sperm over a year, possibly 2. theres no way 2 albinos could hatch out normals unless there is something else at play

I didn't get anything switched around. I am very careful to label everything and not get anything mixed up. I have had the male since he was a hatchling and the female as a juvenile. She was bred to an amel last year and ended up with all amels. This year she was bred to only my sunglow. No other male got near her. This year and last year were the only two years she was bred.

WK Jul 03, 2008 01:25 PM

Have you bred that male to other female corns? If so, what type female(s) and what where the results?

Interesting occurence!

WK

stylindawg2006 Jul 03, 2008 08:41 PM

I also bred that amel male to another amel female and got amels and snows out of that clutch. So I know that he is het anery but the initial clutch mentioned in this post still doesn't make sense.

boxienuts Jul 04, 2008 12:24 AM

Well that clutch proves that male is homozygous amel, and het anery.

How pink are his eyes or are they more ruby?

Just wondering if he is a hypo linebred for no borders instead of the normal amel no borders sunglows. Also what does his belly look like? I can't remember if hypo bellys have checkers, reduced checkers or no checkers but it would be another way to possibly tell if hypo.

I suspect the mom is Lava het Amel het Anery. Check her eyes to see if they are actually more ruby red then pink red.

I just checked the picture of a Lava over on the VMSHerp webpage and it looks just like your picture of the mother even down to the white speckling arround the saddles.

If this is the case then all those babies are het Lava in addition to the expected genes.
i.e.
2/16 snow het lava
2/16 anery het amel het lava
4/16 amel het anery het lava
2/16 amel het lava
4/16 normal het amel het anery het lava
2/16 normal het amel het lava

Let me know what you all think.
