lighting question

mlove Jul 02, 2008 11:30 AM

I went to the SA zoo two days ago to get lighting/heating ideas for the large indoor desert enclosure I'm building. In the desert iguana cage they had lighting on the ceiling atleast 8-10 feet above any climbing surface and basking spot lights pointed at an angle atleast 5 feet away from the basking areas. I don't know if the uv came from the ceiling light fixture or the basking bulb but I assume a zoo would make sure uv was present. My question... Any ideas what type of heating bulbs the zoo used? It would have to be a pretty strong bulb to reach 110 degree temps from 5 feet away. Also, would the uv be beneficial to the lizards if it was such a far distance?

I know that Bob Mac has Megarays made for large enclosures like that. They produce lots more UVB and are broad beam, and he won't sell them to anyone who doesn't have a UVB Meter. I would say, talk to him. He does sell to and advise zoos. Thats what I would do.
