The sterilite and/or rubbermaid containers are just great. They are low cost, easy to handle/clean, and many of them are transparent enough to see your snakes pretty well (not as well as glass, obviously). I got real lucky and found some 50 gallon ones at Wal*Mart awhile back for 10 bucks each!!! My bigger ratsnakes are in those. You can use a woodburner or soldering gun to burn ventilation holes (make sure you do it outside).
I drilled my first few, but it's a pain and sometimes you split the plastic. Yeah, they work great. Also, if you buy several of the same size, you can usually get ones that stack real well, and that helps keep the lid on tight. Duffy
No, acrylic is fine. Make sure not to scratch it up

And I am VERY pleased with them. If you havent made cages before or havent worked with acrylic I would definately recommend Paul Augusts(of Md in the caging classifieds)use of 1/4"material. If you decide to make them yourself take into account ability to clean, efficiency to heat as well as overall cage usage. Nothing like them out there but I do suggest paper towel substrate for more efficient cleanings.Jeff
