Refusal to shed

PhillyBoyInTN Jul 02, 2008 04:19 PM

Has anybody had a snake refuse to shed? The first girl of mine to lay this season laid eggs on 4/14. Since that time she has eaten 3 times. She went into deep shed and then her eyes cleared up about 2 weeks ago but she still hasn't shed it yet. Her skin is starting to get a bit wrinkly but she won't shed it off. Her humidity is on point plus I mist her down every day. She has a hide box to peel it off but isn't doing it. Any thoughts or ideas appreciated....

I would givew her a good soaking for 24 hours in shallow water that will stay at the proper temps.

When did she go blue? One of mine goes VERY opaque then clears up for almost 2 weeks before he finally sheds. It threw me off at first until I got the rhythm down.

It has been about 2 weeks since she cleared up but she has never taken this long, none of my BPs have....

I had one of my girls do that this year. Layed, ate, went in to shed and then never did it... about 3 weeks went by, I worried, and then one day she shed out. No problems since.

Did you do anything extra to her when it got past 2 weeks (mist more, etc.) or did you just wait it out?

I would soak her for an hour a day till she sheds at the same time she will be well hydrated. I Soak all of my reptiles weekly for half hour.

I have seen something like this on a few occasions throughout the years that I have been keeping snakes (seen it in a bci and a few ball pythons)... If a snake is opaque and you feed it a large meal, it may not be active enough to rub the old skin off... what happens if the old skin stays on too long, the liquid (whatever it is called?) that is between the old and new skin will dry up, the old skin will get wrinkly and it may likely be stuck until the next shed in extreme cases (this happened to me twice). If she just won't take it off, or it may not want to come off even if you try, just wait it out until the next shed. 100% of the time I've seen this, everything comes off next shed - I just make sure not to feed them while blue for the second shed cycle. For most cases, eating while blue has not appeared to cause any issues that I can see.

Hope this helps!

Regards,
Bristen.

I'd certainly do everything I can to get it off now, but it's getting wrinkly and everything is still on, it may be hard. The only thing I was saying is if it's not coming off, don't worry too much about it. They can live with two layers of skin until the next shed. They are uncomfortable and may refuse food, but she should be fine in the long run.

Good luck,
Bristen.
