Pancake Outdoor Enclosure

robinb Jul 02, 2008 07:36 PM

We wanted to share our outdoor enclosure built for our pancake tortoises. They are tricky to keep outdoors, since they are willing and able to climb nearly anything! We used cinder blocks for the enclosure. Then we cut vinyl rain gutters and screwed them to the cinders to create a lip to keep the pancakes from going over the top. We also have a seperate enclosure for our red foot and Indian star tortoises. Included is a link to our blog that describes more detail about the homes and enclosures.

We chose rabbit pellets as a substrate because we were trying to choose something he could nibble on if he wanted. The Chelonia.org website recommends grass hay. We tried that, but it looked kind of rough and "pokey". So we thought rabbit pellets are fairly cheap and nearly the same as hay. Actually, since we bought the hay, we put a pile in one end of the cage and he loves to burrow in it. That is where he sleeps every night.
