Found a couple of "wood snakes?" PICS

muuurph Jul 03, 2008 02:33 PM

Found these while doing this years wood, i think there called wood snakes? anyways im in maine, ive seen these guys twice before, my dad tried picking one up the other time and the snake went for him, pretty good sized...havent seen any snakes here since last year, but those were all gardeners....i touched one of them and it was pretty dry and rouch feeling, thinking they must have some thick skin!

Garter snakes. Harmless but they will bite readily.

Many folks are under the false impression that the name is pronounced "gardener",...when in fact, it is "garter". They got their name a LONG LONG time ago, it's because of the fact that their coloration and striping closely resembled the garter straps on the old-time garter belts, just like the type Great Grandma used to wear.

It tends to paint a very eerie picture in our minds, but that's the real deal!..LOL!

That pic took me back OVER 20 years to a poster in the Nurse's office in High School that had an old lady like that puffing on a cigarette and that was the caption of the poster .

You mean they don't help with the gardening???..hahaha!

Maybe pull some weeds here and there!..LOL!

Kinda like construction reinforcement bars being called "rebarb" by many, instead of "rebar",...my friend and I always get a chuckle out of that stuff!.

We have Gardener Snakes and BlackSnakes according to my neighbors

DMong Jul 04, 2008 11:35 AM

Yes,....when people have learned a name, pronounced wrong or not,...it's hard to change the habit sometimes, especially when most of the population knows "diddly" about snakes to begin with..LOL!
