something in my chams eye

smcallister Sep 02, 2003 03:38 PM

ok, its pretty obvious that my veiled cham has something in his right eye. for a couple of days now, he'll keep them shut while he is basking and today, after some heavy misting, i noticed him blinking his right one and scratching it on a branch. im kinda nervous to take him into the shower since he is still only about 2 months old. is there anything else i can do to help him out or should i just let nature run its course?

Is he keeping just the one eye closed or both? Eye problems are not only from getting things in them. He could be telling you he is a bit dehydrated and babies this young can get dehydrated more easily. The shower can help him hydrate and flush the eye. If you are worried about him falling you can put towels in the tub to cushion a fall or give him something to climb on if he does get to the bottom. Better yet, get a bushy plant to set in the shower that he can use to move in and out of the spray, and aim the showerhead so the spray bounces off the wall first and then hits the plant with less force. Water should be body temp.

It depends, sometimes it's just the one eye but other times, for instance right now, he will keep both slightly closed. I'm going to try the shower thing tomorrow if things dont change. He has lost a little weight since he started this and I need to get this problem remedied fast.

Other systemic things may be going on here...eye problems are sometimes a sign of other health issues including systemic infection, vitamin imbalances, stress. You should take this time to review all your husbandry...nutrition, vitamin and minerals, gutloads, lighting, cage climate, etc. The shower won't hurt, but if it's not actually dehydration it won't solve the problem.
