Toad or frog????

kooer May 23, 2003 02:49 PM

My 5 year old came home with about 50 little itty-bitty toads/frogs. He got them at a baseball game. the kids were digging in a grassy field area when tons of these guys came hopin out!!!! They are soooo cute and we'd like to keep a few. Only question is I can I tell if its a frog or toad?? They are about an inch in size. Kinda grayish green with tiny spots/bumps. I'd like to know what it is so we can properly care for them. We have a bearded dragon so we already have food(crix, worms) and a 15 gallon tank our beardie used to use. Any help would be great! We'd love to keep them if possible. Thnx for oyur help!!

Hello,
First of all, can you tell us where you are located?
Is it possible you could take a pic for us?
Where you found them was there water near by?

It sounds to me like these are little toads.
Start off with a substrate like Bed-a-Beast, have a small water bowl, and change it every day. Lighting will most likely not need to be required. You can feed them very small crix, or bigger pin heads. Dusted with vitamins, fairly often cause there just babies. You can also feed them small worms, or chopped up worms. Most toads love them, mmm.

Thats pretty much all, I can tell you cause of the limited info for now.
Goodluck, got any more detail?
Steven

If its skin has bumps it's toad. If the skin is smooth its a frog

That doesn't always apply with the bumps. I had leopard frogs and two had pretty bumpy skin while the other was smooth.

Hey there, Im in northern california. right outside Sacramento. My son found them at a baseball field. There is a marshy grass area the kids play in. When they dug a hole in the ground tons and tons of these li' guys popped out. They are tiny!! no more than 1 or 1&1/2 inches. I have them on gravel in a 10 gallon with a water bowl and have been feeding them pin heads. The guy at petco said they were lemon toads. Don't know if i trust him or not. Thanks for the great advice. Ill put some bed a beast or something else in. Thnx so much.

The guy at petco is nuts and doesn't know what a lemon toad is. The picture in my signature is a lemon toad (or also known at a Christmas Toad) and they are from the mountains of Chile.

I aggree. They are much more likely to be a native toad or frog, or at least a commonly introduced species. The chances of them being lemons is pretty remote.

Have you gone to the library and checked out a book on frogs and toads of your area?

Finding them while digging a hole has me curious whether they are spadefoot toads. Do their eyes have horizontal or vertical pupils?

Whats a lemon toad? There's no such thing!!!
Ok, so I assume you have little toads. Please take them off the gravel.(They can easily become impacted)

As an aquarium have them on Bed-A-Beast, or fertalizer/pestaside/herbaside free top soil. A small bowl of unchlorinated water is good. You should have hiding places for your little toads. A rock to hide under,a flipped over small flowerpot, maybe plant something like a spider plant in the cage.
You could also just put somethings like a bunch of marsh grass.

Goodluck,
Steven

A Lemon Toad is also known as a Christmas Toad. There are a couple other names they go by as well... all depends on where you are and who is selling them. I have two but baught them at Christmas Toads.
