My Boxies Are UnAmerican!

curtis9980 Jul 04, 2008 06:21 PM

All four of my box turtles turned their noses up at the 4th of July watermelon I just offered them. Both of the 3-toeds and both of the Easterns (which isn't too odd since the juvies turn their noses at most everything at first). Even my male 3-toed, who eats EVERYTHING, and from my hand, took one bite and then literally RAN around a log, through the water dish, over a fern, and back under a hiding spot. I'm so disappointed in these UnAmericans.

So are my sulcatas. We roasted a whole pig(sooo good!). Since we got a treat I offered the sulcatas some cantalope and watermelon(I know, I know) and the smaller one hissed at me. The big one started trying to ram me for no apparent reason. The boxies took it though. And the dogs got their 4th of July barbeque.

That's how mine all go after cantelope. So I was shocked when they turned down watermelon. I've got them all eating such a variety of things though, even my Eastern juvies who were picky when I first got them, that I'm not worried about them turning down a "delicacy" fruit.

Looks like desert ornate box turtles. I use to see a bunch of those at the Tampa Reptile Mania and Exotic Expo, CB babys, but not too often anymore. I guess the Texas law they passed made people want to sell their adults.

they are desert ornates, these are from NM. The female was in my yard when we bought the house. The previous owner said she was here when she bought the house too. The male was one my son owned and was moving to a new house. I think both were probably wild but in captivity for a long time.
