My Second Clutch!

SpectreBCIs Jul 04, 2008 07:09 PM

So within 12 hours of my first ever clutch, I get my second! Mom proved out to be het anery, but dad didn't prove out to be a dominant ghost. 23 babies in total with 3 slugs and no stillborns. No big bellies or yolks. All in all it's been an exciting day. Now I have them on wet paper towels with a heat source. Can I over handle them, or do I just need to leave them alone? I want to hold them all and take a look at their patterns, but don't want to traumatize them. Thanks for the advice.

Some of those do look like they have yolk bellies, nothing major though! I would set them up and you want them moist not soaked! Give them some time to get going which won't talk long. You'll have plenty of time to enjoy them in the coming days. My philosophy is to leave them alone as much as possible for the first 72 hours or so, and only handle them when cleaning the soiled paper towels which you will probably be doing a couple times a day over the next couple days anyways! Great looking litter and I see a couple of really nice looking Ghosts in there!

Thanks for the advice. You can study and read all the posts, but when you actually have that first clutch and then a second, it all goes out the window! Can't wait for them to shed.

Thanks Mike. It was good seeing at the show down here in San Diego. Can't wait to take that motley off your hands!

So, within hours you not only joined the club - those who have produced babies, you took it to the next level - those who have produced multiple litters in the same year. Congrats, I see some nice looking babies in that pile!!!

I agree with Al, for the most part leave them alone for the next few days to a week. Frequent paper changes at first, tapering off as they lose all those bits and pieces from the umbilicals. The intent being to keep them on damp clean towels. If kept nice and warm, around 86-87 right over the heat, they will most likely be in a wriggling mass on top of the heat source. This will help them digest any remaining yolk. My last litter spent nine days like that and all shed out within a 24 hour period. All but one ate within a day or two of shedding.

Thanks for the info Dave. So I have them on the damp paper towel that i am changing daily, and my temps are right about there during the day, then they drop to 78-80 at night. Most of them hang out on the warm side, but I got a couple that are really active and just going all around. It amazes me how strong they already are. I've been drooling over everyone elses clutches for the last 4 years and am stoked that I got 2 in 2 days! Thanks again for the info.
