I shot my eggs at 84, 85, 86 this afternoon with my PE1 temp gun, while the spider robotics t-stat read 88.9
How low can temps drop & not be too low?
And for how long would eggs at 84 not get skunked?

Where do you have the probe for the t-stat?

The need for a calibrated lab grade thermometer isn't really warranted, but they read they TRUE temp. The temp probe and temp gun are not 100% accurate. Your eggs will probably be fine.
Good luck.

in that type of use, the PE-1 Temp Gun will shoot within 1 degree of true temp, and in my experience, probably to a tenth of a degree.
84 is starting to get awfully low...

Robyn,
I didn't mean to make it sound as if they are on an extreme end. I know the temp guns usually have a differential of /- 1 degree, but some are as much as /-3. The thermostat probes can be exact or way off. I personally love my PE-1! Everyone should have AT LEAST one.

oh, it's no problem, and i appreciate the support. i was just trying to say i use my temp gun as the reference, as i find a lot of probes to be variable in relation to actual egg temps, especially due to setup choices, like probe placement, egg box setup and venting, heating element location etc.

personally i would trust the the "thermistor type" probes on the herpstats and helix over any infrared type laser thermometer.
laser thermometers are usually in the 2-3 deg. /-
display resolution in tenths and accuracy in tenths are two whole different things.

What's a "thermistor type" probe?

thermistor type like this one,

Sounds like you would know Kirchhoff's Law. I went to school for electronics & worked for 15 years making very high end logarithmic video amplifiers for military radar applications. I really like the proportional nature of the Herpstat and believe it gives you the best accuracy for the price. I addition to this, I really like that I can calibrate my Herpstat with the sensor matching offset feature. This is a really nice device for just over $1oo bucks.
