Monitor newbie questions

Hi I am planning on getting some red ackies and I would ultimately like to breed them but there are a few questions i have. I have heard what may be a few "urban legends" the first is that they have a small window of reproductive years and the second is that if you raise a group of babies together that you will end up with only one male. The reason behind these questions is I have seen adult pairs offered but I don't want to buy some that are past their "prime" and also I don't want to spend two years raising a group of babies that turn out to be all males. Since most of my experience is with snakes I haven't run into these issues before. Thank you for any information that you can provide.

your best bet is to start with a group of hatchlings, period.
