very dark bloodred hatchling.........

wisema2297 Jul 06, 2008 07:48 AM

What do you guys think about this one? He/she is way darker than any of the other normal bloodreds in this clutch. I have never hatched bloodreds before so I do not have any experience to use as a reference point. His head is almost a purplish color and the eyes are so dark you can't make out the pupils. I'm sure he will brighten up a bit after his first shed but he stood out to me almost as much as his hypo bloodred siblings did.

Here are pics with the next darkest sibling bloodred and with a hypo bloodred sibling.

That dude looks hypermelanistic. I've seen old bloodreds gain black, but I've never seen a hatchling with that much dark pigment. Looks like you've got a cool new project to work with!

Thanks Tim!! I am trying to find pics on the net of fresh hatched anery bloods and pewter bloods to compare this one with. But the first shed should tell a lot in a few days. It may just be a darker than normal, normal bloodred......not getting my hopes up. Hopefully Don S., Kathy L., or KJUN will chime in.

Thanks.
Ralph

That snake is way cool looking, interesting head pattern or lack of, it would be really neat looking if it stays purple colored as adult. Could it be a charcoal bloodred, the parents being both bloodred and het charcoal? I don't know, I'm not a cornsnake expert I'm just possing the question for discussion, so no need for angry replies or hate email?

Angry replies or hate mail? LOL.I'm as much in the dark with bloodreds as you are..........and this is not faunacl..LOL!!

The only thing I am sure about with this one is that the parents are het hypo. It could be nothing more than a darker normal bloodred since there is a great amount of variability among normal coloring for corns...........only time will tell.

Maybe Don S. or Cathy L. will offer their expertise on this little one.

Thanks.

Scratch the charcoal bloodred idea that was dumb, there looks to be an increase in mel even on the centers of the lighter scale and like you said the eyes, not so much a lack of red, it's too purple. Definately a project worth pursueing IMHO. At the very least you might have a really nice dark bloodred to work with to keep improving your line. Exciting stuff, thanks for sharing, and congrats on your "freak" of the litter. Good luck
