Dniles Jul 06, 2008 01:22 PM

This girl is a machine and has laid nice large clutches for the last four years. Today she laid 14 huge eggs!

That is a great looking big snake. I can't wait until mine gets that big. It is a male about 3ft long.

Hey Joe. How is your female looking these days? She should be pretty full by now, I think you posted about her several weeks ago? How does she look?

It was about 3 weeks ago. As you and others suggested, I put the male back in with her (while she was still in the blue). She shed a few days later and he was ALL OVER her. He wouldn't even let her finish shedding. This is the first time breeding for this pair.

Great news. Sounds like she was just ovulating when you posted. Mine got so huge this year ovulating, I wondered too whether she was gravid. Glad to hear things are working out for you.

Awesome, another huge clutch! Where are your breeders from?

Dniles Jul 07, 2008 07:06 PM

They are San Antonio zoo stock.

Dave, all the Black Milks in this country (except 2 other bloodlines that I have and another person has) are all the same.

Its a real long story but they all came from the same place and same people except one huge male that was w/c and brought into the country by Tom Crutchfield.

It was 9-14-1985 that the first blacks were produced in the country. It was a clutch of 11 eggs and it was from a w/c gravid animal that was thought to be a mussarana.
They were very surprised when they hatched out tri-colors.Thats when they new what they had.

Fred Antonio and Van Horn made a few more trips down to Costa Rica and did bring back a few more (none were exact same locales either) and thats all that were brought into the country.
This was in Central Fl and they sent some Babies over to San Antonio Zoo.Alan Karden and others there bred them pretty easy and people like John Cherry,Soderberg etc... Got them out into the hobby.
Mark Bell lived in Central Fl and had some from Them and some from San Antonio Zoo.When he got his from the Texas Zoo they had already crossed that giant w/c male that had been brought into the country by Crutchfield. It is believed to be a panama animal but nobody knows for sure.
So, in a nutshell there was about 7 animals(one gravid) all collected by two guys (and probably help from some natives)and one imported by Tom that makes up whats in the country as we know it.

Its just funny to see listed "so and so's line" and I have even seen people keep the "lines" seperate.LOL.....They are all the same.
If anything the Fl Zoo line is the purest but they have all been crossed along the way with the San Antonio line that is both Fl Zoo line and Crutchfield line.

So, yes there could be different people's "stock" but there is only ONE line.

You will see 2 more totally different and totally locale lines come available in the next few years. One may be available as early as (09).I will try and keep everybody posted.

Thanks for the history Shannon. So you see/expect any difference in the "new" bloodline that you are working with?

oh yeah, they are way diferrent. One line doesn't get pure black at all really and some adults are bi-colored but have a black cover (almost silver)on them.

Shannon!,...that's pretty funny about the Mussurana thing!..LOL!

I was aware of most of that history, but didn't know about a few other things you mentioned too, so thanks for the extra info!

It's funny,.....I was chatting with Tom Crutchfield just two days ago about a bunch of other snake related stuff. As you know, he's a great guy who's very knowledgeable, and has been in the industry forever!

Yes, He is a great guy and its a shame he kinda got a black eye a few years ago with those lizards etc...
Setting people up should be against the law but I guess its not.

Interesting...John Cherry told me a slightly different version and said that there is a different line that came into the FL Zoo, but in any event, that's cool you have fresh blood.
