Quarantine after shows- riding home

OKReptileRescue Jul 06, 2008 01:51 PM

ok-- last year I went to the NARBC show in arlington--- I was sent down there with "orders" from several friends... I came home with 8 animals (only 2 were mine). On the ride home-- they all rode together....

I kept them all quarantined from my stuff at home... but what about the ride home?

thanks
~Beth

Hi, Beth!

You might as well ask "What about the time they spent at the show?" I'd think that any reptile that visits a herp show is breaking quarantine.

well.... true.... that adds a whole new... rather frightening issue....
I saw more than a few dozen WC animals at the NARBC show last year... a show that was advertized as "CH only"... makes me nauseous....

You can only control it so far. I think the best thing to do is control it at your house. If it comes in the door it goes into QT. If it leaves the house and intermingles with other snakes at a show or breeder loan and comes back it gets treated as new and goes into QT.

Keep it simple.....

The thing that would concern me during transport of animals from multiple sources would be the possibility of fluid transfers (Ie,say one animal decides to urinate in it's bag,and it gets to another animal in it's bag).So i would keep each bag in a separate plastic tub for the ride.
Also, spraying the bags with BK,or PAM should eliminate any mites that may decide to hitchhike on the bag along the way.
Use of a hand sanitizer between the handling of each bag will help as well.

we hit up the boxes and bags all with BK-II upon entering our facility, or sometimes even outside. we soak everything first. soaking rehydrates the animals, but also floats off mites or other concerns, or at least some to visually cue you in to a problem.

after soaking, they go into a dry container, and then we use the BK-II.

that is for our own PE animals that left our facility and are coming back in. we are even more particular about new animals coming in.

i am also not likely to buy anything from a table that has mites, but at a show, you would be surprised at the "names" that have mites on their tables : )

regardless, it can be scary to bring home new live reptiles from a show. best to have well practiced quarantine and evaluation procedures in place, and the tools to prevent parasite infestation : )
