azureus breeding behavior

argus411 Sep 02, 2003 05:10 PM

I have a trio of azureus of what I now believe to be 1.2. The assummed female follows around the male and attempts to stroke his back. The male wants nothing to do with her. Is there any explaination for this? Is there any advice on how to induce the male to be more receptive? I've also never heard calling or seen any other breeding behavior. The frogs are between 13 and 14 months old.

I don't know too much about the azureus, but im guessing that your male isn't ready yet. His lack of calling is a good sign that he's not interested. You might want to try and raise the humidity. Also, you might also want to find a clip of some leucomelas calling and see if the male will feel like he's got some competition, and he might start up. You never know though- sometimes it's just being patient. For me, i'm the exact opposite. At first i thought my female auratus was ready to go and that none of the males were mature enough yet, but last night i heard one of my my males call about 4 times or so. I checked for eggs this afternoon, and none to be found, so apparently i guess my female is either not ready or just not intersted i dunno. So just give it some time, he'll probably come around sooner or later.
Best of Luck!

that's my two cents-- whether it was worth it or not

Yeah I think your are right, my male might not be ready. But the female has been displaying this behavior off and on for the past two months. I actually do have a recording of azureus that I play and humidity is not the problem. Just wanted to see if maybe there was some other reason my male was rejecting my female. Anyways thanks for your input and if anyone has any other suggestions let me know.

p.s. I dropped the temp to about 73 degrees from about 78

In my experience, this is normaal behavior. The females seem to always initiate the courtship and the males will seem to be ignoring them. This could go on for days but eventually leads to a clutch. Just be patient and wait to see the results. You'll most likely never see the male call....thBest of luck and keep us posted.
