Updated baby pictures #1

Miloradovich Jul 06, 2008 03:44 PM

I hope everyone had a great 4th. Friday was my first day off in a month and a half now so I am really enjoying my long weekend. It gave me a chance to take some updated photos of some of the new babies here. So here comes a lot of new pics.

First up is a yearling half brother to all of the new BRB's that I have right now. I hadn't realized how much bigger he'd gotten until I had new ones to compare him to.

And this pic is just to show how much all these little guys really enjoyed and appriciated our photo shoot. lol

Anyway here are new pics of all the babies from the April 30th litter. All these guys have shed twice now.

Pics of the other litters will follow.

These guys are from the second litter born on May 4th.

I'd say this litter has the brightest colored babies and they were also the smallest babies of the three litters.

Miloradovich Jul 06, 2008 03:53 PM

And the third litter born most recently on June 19th. Shots were taken a couple of days after they had all shed for their first time.

First off, the bad news. I woke up yesterday to a het leopard female that I was really hoping for, laying litter of all slugs about two and a half weeks before her projected due date. A real bummer as I was really looking forward to seeing some nice leopards from her.

And the good news, I woke up this moring to find my first clutch of ball pythons hatching! Made me feel a litte better after yesterdays let down.
Here are some pics....

We cut the remaining four eggs after we took these pics and the most amazing thing was that 5 out of the 6 eggs ended up being albinos from a het X albino breeding! Very exciting! Can't complain about those odds!

Anyway thanks for looking and I hope everyone else is enjoying their holiday weekend as much as I am!

Big congrats Milo! Between the ball and the BRBs you suddenly have LOTS of little mouths to feed.

Nice looking snakes.

Thanks Mike!
Yeah always lots of mouths to feed. I think all the new rainbows put the count at over 200 snakes in the basement right now. Of course finding healthy newborns is definately rewarding and a big part of what makes all the extra time cleaning cages and feeding snakes worth it.

ReneeValois Jul 06, 2008 05:00 PM

Congrats on the all the albino balls, Milo! Beautiful hatching shots.

Of course, I'm partial to BRB's, so I enjoyed seeing all those photos displaying your wealth of lovely new ones. (I'm especially partial to the orange ones seen in your first round of shots). Cigars all around! Stars and stripes and fireworks too! Happy Fourth of July weekend to you too!

Thanks Renee!
I have been pretty pleased with how a lot of these guys have turned out so far. It always amazes me the variety and range of color you can see in BRB's especially considering that litters 1 and 2 have the same father.
It's hard to beat the beauty of baby BRB's. Makes me more forgiving of their nippy temperments. lol.

i agree im a huge fan of orange BRBs and you have a few in that second litter that have awesome coloring.

congrats all around

rainbowsrus Jul 07, 2008 12:05 PM

Very nice sets of pics!! I have to say I like several of the litter two babies best. Of course the other litters have some stunners as well, congrats on all the sweet looking BRB's.

Also congrats on beating the odds on the balls, that outcome was way in your favor!!!!

Thanks Dave. I was a litte surprised that I got so many albinos with the balls. Unfortunatly one of the albinos didn't make it. It was one of the ones I cut and when it didn't poke it's head out by today I cut a little more and found that it was still born inside the egg. It was fairly well developed so it must have died very recently. Spine was a litte kinked, color was very faint and it eyes didn't look quite right but it was full size and all there. I'm not sure what happened. I still feel very fortunate to have 5 healthy babies and 4 albinos though! 2 are even out of their eggs now.

FRoberts Jul 08, 2008 12:38 PM

Milo,

Congrats on all the babies!!!

What was your amount of days for your ball pythons eggs and at what temp did you incubate them?

Thanks!!!

Frank

Miloradovich Jul 08, 2008 12:51 PM

Thanks Frank,
They pipped on day 54, set at 89 degrees. I was guessing at 55 days but the 54 was perfect as it landed on a day off so I could be home for all the excitement.

How are your pied eggs coming along?

FRoberts Jul 08, 2008 02:01 PM

I have mine at 88 but it occasionaly hits 87 and 89 according to the helix control I am using. So I guess after day 50 I better start looking very carefuly for pippers.

My incubator is on a Helix as well and fluctuated plus/minus 1 degree. I thought waiting for them to pip was tough but once they had waiting for them to emerge seemed like a really grueling wait. My wife just called though as said that the last two were out now so I can't wait to get home and get pictures of them all.

a couple of group shots with all the little ones out of the egg now.

Congrats Milo,

Even that normal het looks GREAT to me!!!!!!

My het to het pied eggs are coming along just great so far.

Aug 2 will be day 55.

We shall see, hope I get good odds like you did.

In the past I have done other het to het with proven phenotypes with colubrids and got very variable results, both great and not so great.

That was a visual to a het breeding correct ?

Well that's much better then 50/50 there!!!

The second Lucy Rat snake clutch just hatched out 10 for 10.

Orange snake fathered the clutch. All look normal and are het for leucism.

Her third clutch is due to hatch between August 18-22. No mating took place and sperm storage had to be utilized (9 fertile eggs out of 12 with no copulations possible)

Could be the orange or the leucistic male or both!!

Yes this clutch was from a het male X albino female. I am really suprised and pleased with the odds, even though I lost the one albino, 4 still makes more than I had expected or even hoped for.
I have a het X het clutch in the incubator still that is due just two days after yours at 55 days.
Congrats again on your rat snakes, can't get any better than a 100% hatch rate.
Best of luck on your pied eggs as well, here's hoping for awsome odds for you too!

Thanks Jeff, that seems to be the general consensus about the second litter. Definately the brighter colored babies although I have to say some of the others have great irridecence with their darker backgrounds. I am anxious to see how they all develop after a couple more meals and sheds. The second litter were all about 10 grams on average smaller than the other two litters too but all seem to be catching up very quickly.
