Snake found in box of bananas.

mikesnake Jul 06, 2008 04:41 PM

Someone on a different forum found this snake in a box of bananas shipped from the Dominican Republic and asked if I knew what it was. Well, I'm kind of stumped. I'm guessing Epicrates striatus striatus or possibly a different subspecies. Also, since the guy can't release it, is it primarily a rodent eater? Thanks for any and all help!

That is Epicrates striatus, although the subspecies depends on the island it comes from. It looks right for striatus striatus.

They are good captives and most will take prekilled rodents readily.

I can tell from the pic that snake is a juvenile so more than likely it will only eat anoles for a while. Even scented pinkies many times are refused. If your lucky it may grow up to be one like this as they go thru an octogenetic color change....TC

where do you get you bananas? I buy them all the time and none of them ever came with a free snake? Is that a special at Wal-Mart? Do I need a coupon?

and to end up with a Haitian Boa. What luck. Those things are awesome. I developed a fascination with them when I was about 9, working at my friend's exotic pet shop. A guy brought in a 6 foot snake beacause he didn't want it anymore, but had no idea what it was. My friend, the owner of the shop, was somewhat puzzled too until we looked it up and figured out what it was. They're not exactly the most common snake in the pet trade. I really loved it's look and pattern. One day when I was stretching inside to clean it's cage, in the top shelf of the display, out of nowhere it struck and just missed my face by about an inch. Scared the hell out of me. I actually saw the teeth fly by my eye.

I had a 1.3 group of Cubans a few years ago, and wanted to get some Haitians a few years ago, but decided to use my limited space for ball pythons and copperheads instead. Everytime I see any Angulifer or Striatus available, I'm so tempted to grab them, but just never do. Still one of my favorite snakes though. Very unique boas.

Unfortunately, it wasn't me that found it. I was helping someone on a Yahoo reptile group identify the snake. I'm only guessing, but I think he was in England. He said it was in the box of bananas. Trust me, I'm very jealous. Some people have all the luck!
