Yearling Calico Chinese Beauty

tbrock Jul 06, 2008 05:08 PM

While doing some routine cleaning today, I decided to get a pic and weight on this little guy. He is about 43 days shy of being one year old, and weighed 136 grams today. I don't have a length measurement for him, but I estimate him at about ~36 inches.

Thanks Diego! Chinese Beauties (Orthirophis taeniurus taeniurus), are a smaller variety of the Beauty Snake group, and stay just under six feet in length (max at about 70 inches). This makes them a good choice imho for someone who wants to keep Beauties, but doesn't have a lot of space. They are also a fairly docile variant, and I have not been bitten by one of these yet. Their fast, racer-like movements make you think you are about to get chewed on any second, but they only struggle to get away. The babies never even struck in self defense!

The calico morph is quite rare in the U.S., and my searches for unrelated bloodlines have all been dead ends - literally.

It's a "little man" rather than a "little lady", though! LOL I never probed him, but I did suspect it was male from the beginning, and it is obvious simply looking at his tail now.

I am hoping he will be up to breeding size by this winter.
