help please!, mold in boa cage...

bergmantis Jul 06, 2008 09:43 PM

So I have a few 07 boas in a boaphile rack with 50% humidity, 88 degrees hot and 80 cool. I clean out every cage twice a week but I have been noticing when I cleaned cages the past 2 times, the poop in two of the shelves had grown mold on it. I have noticed on the two different snakes in these shelves, they have some dark green blotches on their nose and above their eyes on their head. I can only assume this is from rubbing their head into their poop with mold. I took them out and tried rubbing it off gently with a wet paper towel but it didnt come off. Maybe it is stain? (one of the snakes is albino so it is much more apparent) Could this affect their health? Has anyone else had this happen?

Thanks,

Mat

What sort of substrate? If using any type of bedding, you need to remove it all when cleaning. Mold is a spore, and they travel on and spread the spore.

Yes, molds can prove harmful to you snake if not tended too.

Use Chlorhexadine when you clean. It's microbicidal and fungicidal. Smells good too.

Where can I get Chlorhexadine?

I use newspaper substrate and a plastic water bowl. I change all the paper and clean the water bowl and rubbermaid tub 1-2x per week with dawn dishsoap.

Chlorhexadine is the same thing as name brand Nolvasan. Large feed stores sometimes carry it or Farm supply stores. If all else fails the web allows you to find practically everything. Hope I've made sense.

I suspect the color that wouldn't rub off, probably came from the newsprint ink. Newsprint is also known for getting mold sometimes.

I switched to this stuff. I'll never go back.

Hope that helps
