how many have hatched "twins"?

chonjoepython Jul 07, 2008 01:06 PM

i was curious as to how many of you have had two babies out of one egg. is this a common occurance? the reason i ask is this. a couple of weeks ago i had a cluth of six hatch. nothing odd here. over the weekend i was on vacation, and knew that upon returning home, my other cluth of ten would be hatching. sure enough two babies were out leaving two empty eggs. overnight the others hatched. (all but one runt) i hurredly set up the others. just now i did a final inspection and count, and including the little guy still in his egg, have eleven snakes. again, out of ten eggs. soooooo, i was wondering how often this happens. thanx for reading.

It's funny you should ask this now. I just hatched out twins a day ago. This was a first for me. They are very tiny, about half the size of a normal hatchling. Their umbilicus were connected so I had to tie off 2 spots and cut it. They seem to be doing fine and have absorbed just about all of the umbilicus. We'll see how they do in the coming weeks.

Hey Carl! What eggs hatched? Were they your Albino's eggs?

...if you could call them that.

Twice I hatched a little runt of a snake and upon inspecting the egg found a mass that had "parts" of a twin.

Once I had an egg pip and two heads poked out. The first guy crawled out on his own. He was a tiny little thing - 26 grams if I remember correctly. This guy made it and still resides in my collection. He is a salty little thing that hates just about everything. I'll include a pic of him at hatching at the bottom of this post. The other "twin" was only a third of a snake. Tiny, but perfectly formed from the head to the first third of its body at which point it was connected to the yolk mass. Needless to say this snake did not make it.

I hatched twin albinos last year....they actually hatched but had deformities (small heads). They only lived a little while.

My very first clutch of ball pythons where 50% chance het albinos and included a set of (male) twins. If I remember right they where both under 30 grams but ate and did fine. I think I eventually sold them to a pet store. Still have a couple of their sisters.

i hatched two sets of twins this year. this is the first time that i have had it happen. one set of twins were female yellowbellies from a pastelyellowbelly to a normal. the other set of twins were one male normal and one male het red axanthic from a het red to normal breeding.

...i guess it isnt that uncommon. im guessing the runt still in egg is a twin of one of the smaller babies. all of the babies out are of average or above average size. i hope the little one makes it, he appears to be ok of what i can see. just some yolk left to absorb.

Hey Joe! What's up? Funny you brought this up because I juct hatched twin het pieds. I originally had 5 eggs and 3 of them went bad. I came home yesterday and three snakes had crawled out of their eggs. One was normal size at about 50 grams and the other two were 21 grams each. This was the first time I have ever hatched twins.

I hatched twin pastels in 2006... one did not survive though, it looked like a water balloon and after being assist fed for months, it died when I moved it out of the incubator.

Bristen.
