reptile carpet vs. paper towels?

trex8692 Jul 07, 2008 01:43 PM

ok i think im in quite a delimma here

im thinking about which substrate will be the best for me and a baby or juvenile leo i will soon buy

i know the above two substrates both have a low impaction rate but i want to know which one you would recommend for me

ive heard stories that reptile carpet can rip toes and claws and teeth out of some lizards whenever they walk over little hairs sticking out. is this true?

i want a substrate that is both safe and natrual looking so i decided against paper towels initially but after hearing that story im getting second thoughts..

also please dont recommend slate or tile for me because i know that that stuff is heavy and i dont want to have to deal with the weight

what do you guys recommend i use?

thanks

I have seen them get claws and teeth stuck in reptile carpet, but never seen any severe consequences from it. I suppose it's possible, but I'd call it unlikely. Anyway, paper towels are what I use, because I think they look fine (I get the plain white soft textured ones) and because they're easy to clean up.

Well, I use disposable cage liners. And yes, lizards can get their toes ripped off. I actually had a baby bearded dragon get its claw stuck in there and when I got home it was almost full ripped off. It did not look pretty.

I never said it couldn't happen, just that it seemed unlikely the majority of the time. Animals do not *usually* tear pieces of their own bodies off. Anyway, I'm not sure what disposable cage liners are exactly, but they sound similar to paper towels, so our recommendations seem to agree in concept at least.

Pretty sure it is. But anyway go to kingsnake.com/cageliners. This has worked best for my geckos and dragons. I also sometimes use paper towels too though (just depends what I feel like using).

We use the vinyl sticky tile that you find at most home improvement stores. It's easy to clean, comes in any color/style that you like, doesn't move once paper backing is removed, very cheap to buy(like one or two bucks per piece),light weight(not heavy like the slate) and can be cut to fit any size that you may need. I just use an unscented baby wipe to quickly remove waste. just a thought
