Info on Carefresh Pet Bedding

ballmorphsbymike Jul 07, 2008 03:58 PM

I use newspaper for bedding for my ball pythons, but was wanting to use something more absorbable for water spills, etc... Has anyone used this for ball pythons or currently using this....just wanted to make sure there is no respirtory issues by using this also....Mike

I used to use it for things like kenyan sand boas and other burrowing species--- they seemed to LOVE it--- I used the different colored stuff.

I've not had a problem with it-- but I did feed the snakes in a different tub with no loose bedding. The stuff is digestable for small animals but I don't risk snakes eating the stuff...

CareFresh is okay. I used to use it, however, I had issues with maintaining decent humidity levels with it.

For dry, desert species it should be perfectly fine. Anything else and you may have to watch the humidity a little closer.

Try a bag. It's not too expensive and if you don't like it for your reptiles it does work very well for rodents.

I use carefresh for the garters, it's perfect for them because they are "messier poopers" and they like the security of burrowing, but with regards to you wanting it for absorbing water spills, it actually molds pretty quickly when it gets really wet, or in higher humidity. Whats wrong with newspaper and heavy crocks for balls, that's what I use, can't beat the cost?

its fine for the smaller balls, but my females over 3000 grams always seem to spill their "heavy crocks" almost everyday..they have some power!....might try T Rex Desert Snow

Head over to WalMart or any other store that sells plastic pots. They should have the plastic base that the pots can sit in.

Simply take one of the large crocks and trace the bottom of it on the plastic base. Cut out the outline and place your crocks into the upside down base. It will hold them steady and make it nearly impossible for the snakes to spill/tip the crocks.

Brandon that plactic pot dish as "training wheels" is a brilliant idea, I am definately adding that to my list of snake keeping tools. The other thing that I have seen done and I use for hatchlings with deli cups and medicine cups, is super glue a bowl down in tub then use a disposible thin plastic bowl set insided that, you can change out the water or replace the thin plastic as needed, it can't get knocked over only problem is cleaning is a little bit more chore.

It isn't cost effective with more than a few animals. I tried switching over to Cell-Sorb, which works well with alot of stuff, but in the end I'm back to Aspen or newspaper because it's just as effective, but cheaper.
