Silly, trivial, rediculous question

Guttersnacks Jul 07, 2008 04:33 PM

I feel silly asking this, but I guess there's a small possibility that someone could provide some useful insight to me, so I'll ask.

I aint too proud.

The drywall in my reptile room is finally finished. So, now I need to prime, paint and do shelving and then I'm ready to rock!

I'm using Killz Premium latex primer, and then regular latex paint. My dufis question is.......which color?
I'd figured on going with white, to help keep the room as bright as possible. But, maybe there's a better color choice for a herp room? Something with a functional visual reason, you know?

I cant even hazard a guess as to give an example, but if anyones already thought this thru and has some ideas, please fill me in.

I went with a sage green in the most matte finish that Sherwin Williams would mix up for me. Matte because I subluxated my shoulder during the construction (a few times actually) and just was not up for doing a good job on the drywall finishing and the matte finish hides imperfections. I did pay extra for a premium paint so the matte finish would be more scrubbable.

Otherwise, I say paint it a color you prefer and make it a place you like to hang out.

Here are a couple of pictures of my room. Obviously had a lot more snakes than the 18 currently listed in my signature.

Scrubbable and durable. Brilliant! You've helped me out GREATLY already. Good thinking. Thanks Chris. I dig the green too.

Sorry to hear about your shoulder!

Scrubbable and durable.

Just an FYI, I do recommend going with more gloss than a matte finish, especially if your drywall finishing is better than mine.

While we're talking about it......I'm tempted to shy away from using oil based paint, 50% of my reason is just because of cleanup, the other 50% for offgassing reasons I guess, but will I really see more benefits with using oil based or will latex be just as good ?

I had someone do the drywall finishing for me, and I went with the economy option as well. They just put a skimcoat up and stuck the tape in it. I didnt want them to cover the tape up with another coat, or sand or anything like that. So its just enough to seal the gaps up for humidity and heat control. $150 was worth the time and trouble in my opinion.

I would avoid oil based paints for this application.

Gutter,
Latex or acrylic/latex paints are just great nowadays.

I used some Sherwin-Williams paint more recently that cost about twice as much as the Home Depot stuff, but ooh what a nice, durable, easy-to-apply paint that stuff is. Home Depot paint goes on like glue (still is good paint). Sherwinn-Williams paint goes on like milk and honey from the gods.

Ok, now you're just tempting me to taste the paint. Seriously. Stop it.

I like the "scientific" look of a clean, white room with metal shelves. There are some great wire wall-mount shelves available from, for example, The Container Store. I use those for general herp supply storage and to hold small enclosures/deli cups. Wire shelves heat nicely - Flexwatt heats the metal which gently heats the deli cups. Just some ideas for you. Might as well have a room that looks sharp!

Since my room is more than a reptile room and will eventually have to re-sell. I picked the floor than the wall color.

Oddly enough its almost the same as Chris's room.

My entire house uses White trim so the wall color has to match just the floor. Its easier to re-paint and the white trim sorta ties the house together. Its the common trend throughout. Each room even uses the same style trim, however each floor of the house has minor differences.

Mark's point of a hospital look has its benifits however, its less inviting my reptile room serves as a lounge of sorts so I want to enjoy it, white walls are too sterile for me.

Good Luck
