Breeding question

Python11 Jul 07, 2008 07:04 PM

Hello all -

I produced my first clutch of Gray bands this year, from a breeder pair I picked up in 2007. My question: How many years can a female generally produce viable clutches? The female I have has been producing since 2002, apparently double-clutching some years. She laid 15 eggs this year, but it appears only 4 or 5 are viable, I'm still holding out hope on some of the others. She has that "spread look" in her tail toward the cloaca, which I am told is an indicator of a female that has been bred a lot. She was produced in 1999, as was the male I bred her with. I am becoming inclined to retire her and just enjoy her for what she is. Any thoughts?

Without seeing the snake, I think you may be referring to what is sometimes known as "hips".
