cricket size?

what is the largest crix you'll feed your anole? Mine are about 3" vent to snout. I know the typical rule of thumb is no wider than their head, but they have eaten large waxworms. I know they are soft bodied so not a problem. Just wondering...

thanks,
lele

I have seen my female whose head can't be longer than an inch eat a fully grown and winged male (perhaps 1.5 - 1.75 inches but definitely bigger than her head). It was quite a noisy one and when the noise abruptly stopped i was pleasantly relieved to see that she was giving him a good chomping! heehee.

I aim for about 1/2". She does fine with a little bigger, but she gets to chase down more of them if I feed smaller ones. Makes her day more interesting. It's got to be dull in there...

If there are any stray ones too big (more than 3/4", I toss them in Arthur's tank.

I think it is ok to feed crickets that are a bit larger than their head size, because it caused no problems for me or the others either, although many breeders say the general rule is to have prey smaller than their head size. Largest cricket I've ever fed was 1.5 in. long, and my small female grabbed it in an instant. Then, while she clamped her jaws onto the cricket once more, the prey got flatter and a spray of juice splashed onto the tank side. Later, she finished without any difficulty.

Don't use crickets you think may be too large. They will usually go down fine and probably won't cause any problems, but why risk it? If you're going to have captive animals you're not supposed to expose them to problems they'd have in the wild... And I always read that smaller crickets are generaly more nutritious, anyway.

I've seen anoles... SMALL BROWN anoles take bugs much larger than their head down without a problem, but I don't think it's something I'd feed them myself at all.
