Welcome Norbert, we are honored to have your European perspective. You will learn a lot on this forum, I am amazed at the accumulative knowledge here, often freely shared.

Your question about what exactly is a black tail compared to a unicolor has been the source of many debates and not many definitive answers. We have also seen the intermediate colors, and even seen black tails fade into unicolors! Some of us think they may be the same species, just extreme morphs. Some think the distinction is in marketing, that the buyers want coal black black tails and honey gold unicolors, and the intermediates are somehow less desired. I certainly can't answer your question, I wonder if others will jump in and debate it again? You may want to search the archives on this topic.

It will be fun to hear from you, the Europeans have made many of the great gains in herpetoculture and we know some incredible D. couperi reside in Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, and Germany. Welcome, vic h.

Hi VICtort,

thanks for your answer. I used the search and there was a lot of interrested answers. i think i named my two females melanurus or blacktail cribos. I hope i found a male for them

I looked at the photo but I had a hard time seeing the tale, which is the most obvious diagnostic feature. You might want to post some more photos, be sure to include the tails. Post them and ask for opinions. This has been discussed before, it led to some strong opinions, many without conclusive data/proof. We also see the "brown tails" here, and classifying them based on the readily available information is confusing. Good luck, I hope you can get us some answers! vic h.

I'm no expert, but the snake looks to be what is commonly called an intergrade.

Norbert, thanks for posting the photos. I can not say, we see similar animals imported here. Some of us wonder if melanurus and unicolor are actually extreme morphs of the same snake, and maybe what you have is the "typical" form? I am not an expert or taxonomist, so I can't say for sure. Maybe the market place is dictating what is a blacktail vs. unicolor rather than science and/or taxonomy? I have seen some animals similar to yours actually fade over a few years, becoming more unicolor than when purchased. I never saw a cribo I did not like, so they will glow with good health and look great with good care whatever they are. Be sure to read the post by geckojon and response by Brian Sharp, a very experienced breeder. Good luck, vic h.
