Who here breeds ASF's?

Jason31 Jul 08, 2008 10:43 AM

How are they for smell and allergies? The mice/rats always get my allergies going. But with my rising collection buying feeders is becoming unreasonable...

If i get 1.2 going in a 20 gallon, how would the smell be?

What if i housed them in a shed? Too hot?

Thoughts?

Odor depends on many things.
There is odor reducing feed which helps and the substrate you choose is also a contributor. If cleaned weekly I have no odor issues. Heat could be an issue that affects their breeding. 70 to 80 seems optimal.

I breed mice for my snakes, and I really dont' have an oder problem. I keep 1 male to 4 or 5 female mice, all my feeders go into a 20L, and girl weaners go into a different tub. I keep them in my computer room with the heat at 75. I also use corn cob bedding, which i get from the local farm store, 40lbs for $6. that'll last me at least a month with weekly cage cleanings.

I got my set up the way it is by trial and error. I dont' like to use pine bedding because the urine soils it quickly, not absorbing it, hense causing the smell. get an absorbable bedding for them, it really does wonders....

We breed ASF...and the odor problem is minimal...We did an experiment when we first got them...just to see how long it would take to get an odor and after 3 weeks you could barely smell them and we had them on pine...we change them once a week just for sanitary reasons but they don't produce a whole lot of waste...not like mice or regular rats
