what size should my hides be?

trex8692 Jul 08, 2008 05:06 PM

i know that i should have 3 hides (moist, cool, hot)

but i dont know what size they should be. i want to get a size that will fit the gecko appropriately thruout its lifespan from a young age to its adult form.

please if you dont mind give the dimensions in inches, or even better a link to websites that sell these hides.

thanks

The hides should be relativly small so the gecko feels secure in it. I use 1.5 pint size freezer storage containers for the humid hide for adults & 1 pint for hatchlings & juvies. As for the other hides, I keep it simple & put a bunch of cardboard paper towel rolls through out the enclosure. Economical & easy to clean.

i plan on buying hides made by companies though like flukers and exo terra

they ahve half logs and half rocks/caves

how long / wide / high should they be?

ok thanks so much for clearing this up (height dosent matter as much right?)

i have one more question though, do you recommend zoo med's new excavator sand for juvies? i thought it would have an impaction rate

or wat about www.blueiguanaproducts.com calcium substrate? it claims to be super digestable?

again thank you so much

Honestly, I've been keeping my geckos on paper towels for so long (mainly due to cost & efficiency) that I'm not to familiar with alot of the commercial products avaliable these days. I was in the dark about Calci-Sand causing impaction up until about a year & a half ago because I only use the stuff to take pictures & display animals on at shows. Years ago I used Calci-Sand with adults & sub-adult with out any issues but still used paper towels with the little ones. So I really can't give you an answer on that. Maybe some one more familiar with these products can.

Like I said befor, relatively small. Avoid the larger ornaments. The size of the humids I use are about 4" by 4" by about 5" tall paper towel rolls are about a foot long. I sometimes cut them down to 4",6",or 8". I know the hides sound small for a 6" to 8" gecko, but I find they curle up in the hides & there happy in them.
So any of the items your looking at I would get in at about the same size as the hides I use.
Hope this helps you out better.
