results of the Jelly bred to a het PB

Bluerosy Jul 08, 2008 07:59 PM

Sorry about the bad pics and the snakes are in pre shed so it is hard to tell anything at this point

I bred a Jelly morph to a het PB/WS and got the resulting babies:

4 normals (2 of which are very black looking)
1.1 Jellies
0.1 what appears to be a Peanut butter (the dark purple one)

Dark purple one:

black normal:

Jelly male:

Now these are from the same female that i bred last year and are siblings to the pewter and the WS that came from that clutch. As you can see how the colors change:

Rainer, how do you tell the difference between PB and Jelly with sexual dimorphism etc within a clutch that could have both(in other words all 4)morphs and sexes? I think you are the only one to see enough to ask....

recently someone asked me how to tell the difference ebetween a Peanut Butter and a Peanut Butter het. Some of the PB hets look so light brown that they appear PB . But the sure way to tell between a PB het and a PB is the black area is a lavender color. You can see this especially around the eyes.

When the PB came out people also asked me how to tell the difference between a Peanut Butter and a regualr hypo. Some thing applied here. The balck area on a Peanut Butter is a lavender color and the black area on a hypo is black.

What does this all have to do with the difference between a PB and a Jelly? I don't have a clue on how to give a difinitive answer between the two. The differences are more suttle but the overall appearance is different.

To make things worse I just hatched out a 16 egg clucth of a F1 gen PB x T neg (original F1 Jellies) and they are all so different. I have white ones all the way to very dark purple Jellies and everything inbetween from high red (grape) coloured to a more bland color. What really throws me on this last large clucth is the white ones and the dark purple ones. To completly different extremes. I will post pics after they shed so we can see what is going on bettwe. Wehn PB are born they have a almost albino appearance before their first shed so the same could be true with the jellies. After the first shed the melanin comes in more and then they look more Jelly or more PB.

With respect to PB vs the hets - am I correct that the difference is much more distinct out of the egg than as adults?

Actually no. The adults are just as disticnt.

If you look at then from a distance it may seem the Peanut Butters and SOME of the PB hets look similar. But closer inspection (I need reading glasses with my age) the black on a true PB is a lavender color. You just have to look close to see.

Rainer, are you expecting any clutches that will have both PB and Jellys within the same clutch?

you need to hire a full time photographer, hahahaha. The quality of your photos is fine, but in order to keep up with the day to day updates in your colony, someone else should take pics while you are doing the other stuff. then hire a biotechnologist who can run electrophoresis gels and whatnot on all your animals so we can sort out some of these gene/genie things.

certainly very interesting,

daveb
